Seraphina glared venomously at the sobbing child in the backseat, any lingering trace of sympathy completely obliterated.
The way the girl cried looked exactly like Nora—her brows furrowed together, tears streaming endlessly.
It only reminded her of Nora, the woman who effortlessly possessed everything Seraphina had ever wanted!
It wasn't fair!
"Stop crying!"
Seraphina violently slammed her hand against the steering wheel, making the horn blare with a piercing screech. Cassie flinched violently, her wails instantly dying in her throat, replaced by broken, terrified hiccups.
Her tiny frame shrank into the car seat, her little hands gripping the seatbelt for dear life. Her eyes brimmed with absolute terror and tears, but she didn't dare make another sound, petrified that if she misbehaved, Seraphina would do something horrific to her.
Taking a deep breath, Seraphina dug into the console, pulled out a wet wipe, and tossed it to the back. Her voice remained hard and unyielding. "Wipe your face and shut up."
Cassie trembled from head to toe. She realized that the woman she knew was gone; she wasn't gentle anymore, just cold and terrifying.
Seraphina faced forward and resumed driving. She turned onto a dirt road that led to The Blackwood Hideout, a dilapidated structure that had clearly been abandoned for years.
She had scouted this location in advance. It was twenty-five miles away from the city center, surrounded by remote villages with terrible cell reception—the perfect place where screaming would do absolutely no good.
This woman, who always maintained an air of aloof perfection, the scholar revered by everyone at The Vance Institute of Medical Science, was now shaking uncontrollably. It gave Seraphina a sick, twisted sense of satisfaction.
So, the mighty Nora Newman could be reduced to this. She wasn't so flawless after all.
Seraphina spoke coldly, "There's an abandoned house in a village twenty-five miles north of the eastern suburbs. Come alone. No cops, and don't tell a soul, or you will never see Cassie again."
Nora's voice lost all its usual composure. "What did you do to her?! Are you out of your mind, Seraphina? She's just a child!"
Smiling leisurely, Seraphina turned to look at the trembling girl on the chair. "Of course she's just a child, which means her life is entirely in your hands. Remember, come alone. If I catch wind of you playing any tricks, you don't want to know what I'll do. I know you won't gamble with Cassie's life."
