I Was His Wife, Then His Widow, Then No One's But My Own novel Chapter 436

Nora let out a slow, steady exhale. "Alright. I'll go check on her myself later."

Over the next few hours, Nora and her team meticulously combed through Annabel's entire treatment protocol from start to finish.

By the time she finally walked out of the conference room, the sky beyond the windows had already turned dark. Only then did the reality of her postponed honeymoon crash back into her mind. She pulled out her phone and saw a text from Xander, sent two hours ago.

"I canceled the tickets."

Nora's heart skipped a beat. Was Xander angry?

She frowned softly. Before they had even gotten married, she had made it explicitly clear that she would never let anything compromise her work. If a medical emergency arose, she would drop everything to do her job.

If Xander was genuinely upset about this, she wasn't entirely sure what to say to him.

She typed a quick reply: "Okay. I just finished up here. We can talk when I get home."

When she walked through the front door, the house was quiet. Bonnie was already asleep. Nora quietly pushed open the door to her daughter's room and pressed a soft kiss to her cheek.

When she finally returned to the master bedroom, Xander was sitting on the edge of the bed. He looked up as she entered, offering no questions about her work and making no mention of the canceled honeymoon. He simply patted the mattress beside him. "Come sit."

Nora walked over, letting out a deep breath. Looking at his calm expression, she couldn't detect any anger, which only left her more uncertain.

"I actually haven't told you this before, but I've never been a fan of hotels. The mattresses are always too soft, and the pillows are never the right height. I never sleep well on business trips. This delay actually works out perfectly for me. It gives me more time to finalize all the itinerary details and make sure every accommodation meets my exact specifications before we leave."

Nora stared at him, stunned for a second. He was clearly just saying that to comfort her. Her eyes prickled with sudden warmth. "Xander Harrison, you are getting terrible at making up excuses."

His eyes danced with quiet amusement. "Is it working, though?"

Instead of answering, Nora leaned in and kissed him. She decided a proper apology was best delivered this way.

Xander's body went completely rigid. As if suddenly remembering something, the tips of his ears flushed a deep red, and his breathing hitched. He tore off his glasses, shifting his weight to pin her gently against the mattress as his mouth crashed down on hers, heavy with absolute devotion.
