Nora frowned as Adelaide continued sobbing through the phone. "He's the only son I have left! If he dies because of you, how am I supposed to go on? I've already lost one son. I refuse to lose another!"
As a mother herself, Nora felt a brief pang of sympathy. She glanced up at Xander, her eyes silently asking for his opinion.
Xander gave a slow nod. Nora let out a heavy breath. "Alright, I'll be there."
She ended the call.
Xander's expression grew incredibly complex. Nora's heart skipped a beat. "What is it?"
He gently held her hands. "There's something I need to tell you. I've been keeping it from you, but it's far worse than Seraphina orchestrating an attack. I need you to brace yourself. No matter what you hear, don't..."
Before he could finish, Nora interrupted him calmly. "Just say it. After everything that's happened, I can handle whatever it is."
Xander took a deep breath, as if making a final resolve. "The car crash that killed your mother and your brother... We have the final answer. It was Finnegan's doing. Here is the evidence."
He unlocked his phone and handed it to her. "I knew I couldn't keep this from you any longer, Nora. And... Frederick wasn't entirely innocent either. He actively covered up his brother's tracks."
Nora's breathing hitched. She had already suspected as much, but hearing the confirmation spoken aloud felt as if her insides were being violently torn apart.
"Why did Finnegan do it? What was his motive?"
The air in the hallway felt completely suffocated, as if all the oxygen had been drained away. Nora sat perfectly still, numb to any physical sensation.
Xander pulled her into a tight, grounding embrace. "It's okay. Look at me, Nora. Now that we know the truth, whatever you choose to do next, I'm right here beside you."
Nora exhaled deeply, her eyes icing over once again. "Even so, I'm still going to the hospital."
"Why?" Xander asked gently.
"To see if the bastard is dead yet," Nora replied, her gaze freezing cold. "To figure out what game he's playing. Does he actually think he can redeem himself? Never in this lifetime. I'm going to make sure he carries that guilt straight to hell."
