Bonnie pursed her lips, then suddenly reached out a small hand and gently stroked Nora's face. "Don't be sad. I'll stay right here with you."
Nora's eyes instantly reddened. She turned her face away and took a deep breath, forcing the tears back.
Just then, the doors to the police station were pushed open.
A man strode inside, bringing with him a gust of biting winter wind.
Dressed in a dark gray overcoat, he was tall and commanding, his aura radiating a fierce and overwhelming presence.
His features were sharp and striking, his brow carrying an imposing, natural coldness, and a pair of gold-rimmed glasses rested on the bridge of his nose.
As the gaze behind the lenses swept across the lobby, a flash of pure ice cut through his slightly upturned eyes the moment he saw Bonnie, though it was instantly masked.
"Daddy!"
Bonnie jumped off the chair and threw herself into his arms.
The man leaned down and scooped her up, holding her securely as his other hand gently patted her back. His voice was deep and reassuring. "You're safe now."
Bonnie peeked out from his embrace and pointed at Nora. "She saved me."
Lifting his gaze to meet Nora's slightly reddened eyes, Xander's own eyes narrowed slightly, a cold glint reflecting off his gold-rimmed lenses.
He paused for a brief second before carrying Bonnie over with long strides. Setting her down, he extended his hand.
"Thank you for saving Bonnie."
The man's voice was cool, yet as he offered his gratitude, the corners of his lips curved slightly upward.
Nora stood up and shook his hand.
His palm was slightly cool, his knuckles well-defined. The handshake was measured and brief.
Nora shook her head with a polite smile. "You're welcome. I was just doing what was right; anyone would have done the same."
