The old man’s words took Seraphina Sullivan completely by surprise.
’A former Player?’
’Saved the world?’
’Another apocalyptic world?’
She felt like she was grasping at something.
Behind these words seemed to lie the true origin of this Death Arena!
She desperately tried to piece together the truth from his furious tirade.
Meanwhile, on another stone pillar, Sean Chandler received a silent command from Seraphina Sullivan’s eyes.
He stopped paying attention to the sudden standoff.
Instead, using his unsuppressed Ability, his gaze shot like lightning as he quickly scanned the remaining people for any sign of Yana Yates.
On the stage, Maxim’s expression remained placid as he faced the soul-searing accusation. Instead, a pitying smile touched his lips, as if he were looking at a clueless child.
"Eric, my poor child, my dear... old friend."
His voice was laced with false sympathy.
"You once fought by my side, yet you chose to betray me. But you see how merciful I am? Even now, I’m still giving you a chance. As long as you become one of the last ten survivors, I can forgive all your past betrayals."
Hearing this, the grief and indignation on the face of the old man named Eric only deepened. He burst into wild laughter.
"HAHAHA! Forgive me? Maxim, even if you’ve become a Divine Favored of the God of Slaughter, we will never submit to your tyranny! A free soul never yields!"
Before his voice had even faded, an ancient wooden staff suddenly appeared in Eric’s withered hand.
He gathered every last bit of Power remaining in his body, and the tip of the staff erupted in a blindingly brilliant light.
A terrifying wave of destructive Energy, powerful enough to tear Space itself, roared toward Maxim on the stage.
This sudden act of defiance made every spectator’s eyes go wide.
However, faced with this desperate strike containing all the old man’s Power, Maxim didn’t even bat an eye.
"Eric, you still don’t understand."
He sighed softly.
With a casual wave of his hand, a shield formed of countless twisted, translucent light screens instantly materialized before him.
The torrent of Energy, powerful enough to move mountains, slammed into the screen of light.
The next second, like a clay ox sinking into the sea, the wave of Energy vanished without a trace, failing to create so much as a single ripple.
"Here, within my Death Arena, I write the rules. I am the master!"
Maxim’s voice was still level, but it carried a coldness that could freeze the soul.
"As a fellow Player who once helped save the world, I gave you a chance. But since you insist on being so stubborn, I have no reason to let you live."
He extended a withered finger and pointed it gently in Eric’s direction.
Before the horrified eyes of everyone watching,
the old man Eric, the one who dared to face the tyrant and voice his defiance, was seized by an invisible hand, his body instantly imploding!
"AH—!"
With a short, piercing scream, Eric’s body suddenly exploded.
With a loud BANG, he was reduced to a crimson mist, vanishing from the arena along with the stone pillar beneath his feet.
Silence!
A deathly silence!
It was immediately followed by even more frenzied and excited cheers from the audience in the stands!
But among the Tributes on the stone pillars, there was only a dead silence. Endless fear washed over them like ice-cold water, chilling them to the bone.
The Power over life and death that Maxim had just displayed completely crushed the last shred of hope in their hearts.
