Seeing Seraphina Sullivan and Chet Lucius return safely, Dr. Ford immediately rushed up to them, his face a mixture of tension, anticipation, and disbelief. "How did it go? Were you successful? That monster..."
Chet Lucius nodded, his tone calm but with a hint of subtle satisfaction.
"It was a success. The Armored Stegosaurus... is dead. Poisoned."
"You... You really did it?!"
Dr. Ford’s eyes shot wide, his voice trembling with excitement as he grabbed Chet Lucius’s arm to confirm it over and over.
"The poison really worked? It killed a monster that big... from the inside?!"
After getting a confirmatory gaze from Chet Lucius, Dr. Ford was so excited he looked ready to jump for joy. He slapped his thigh, his face glowing.
"Wonderful! This is a groundbreaking discovery! It proves that attacking these Blight Beasts from within using biological or chemical means is a completely viable strategy!
It’s far more effective—and much safer—than trying to brute-force their external Force Fields! This... This is hope for the salvation of the world!"
He rambled on, immediately digging through his pack to pull out a wrinkled but well-protected notebook and a pen that was nearly out of ink. He began scribbling furiously in the dim twilight:
"[Field Experiment Log - No. 001] Time: ...
Location: ...
Target: Large-class Blight Beast, Armored Stegosaurus...
Method: Oral ingestion of a mixed, unknown, Highly Poisonous substance...
Results: All vital signs ceased within approximately [TBC] minutes of ingestion. Target confirmed deceased.
Conclusion: High-concentration targeted toxins can effectively penetrate a Blight Beast’s digestive or mucosal defenses, causing fatal damage to its internal organs and nervous system. This validates the preliminary feasibility of the ’Internal Disintegration’ strategy.
Further Research Required: Optimal toxin formula, efficient delivery methods, applicability and dosage requirements for different types/Levels of monsters..."
He wrote so quickly the tip of his pen nearly tore through the page, his scrawl filled with an unmistakable excitement.
When he finished, he carefully returned the notebook to a waterproof inner pocket. Then, with great care, he wrapped the empty poison vials in a soft cloth and stowed them in his pack.
"Let’s go! Quickly! We have to get to the corpse immediately!"
Dr. Ford urged, his eyes gleaming with the fanatical light unique to a researcher.
"We have to perform a preliminary dissection and collect samples as soon as possible!
The less time the monster has been dead, the better preserved the tissue will be, and the more information we can obtain!
Its skin, muscles, bones, organs—especially the areas where the poison’s effects may linger... It’s all priceless research material!"
Chet Lucius opened his mouth, about to ask if it was safe to approach yet, if they should observe for a while, or perhaps deal with any potential residual toxins...
"No ’buts’! Lucius, lead the way! Quickly!"
Dr. Ford refused to listen. He grabbed Chet Lucius’s arm and began dragging him toward the giant corpse, his strength belying his age.
Pulled off balance, Chet Lucius stumbled and shot Seraphina Sullivan a helpless look.
Seraphina Sullivan couldn’t help but laugh at the scene. "What are you waiting for?" she teased. "Your Dr. Ford is dying of anticipation. You’d better hurry up and keep an eye on him!
Don’t let him get so excited he throws himself onto the corpse and gets sick from residual fumes, or gets bitten by some hidden parasite. Otherwise, you’ll have a real mess on your hands."
The teasing only deepened the look of resignation on Chet Lucius’s face.
He glanced over at Sharon Lynn, who was holding Flora Sullivan’s hand and peering in their direction, a mix of curiosity and fear on her face. He couldn’t help but sigh to himself.
’Why couldn’t the system have assigned me someone like Sharon Lynn to protect? She might get scared, but at least she’s an obedient kid.’
