Seraphina Sullivan accepted the special bullet. It felt heavy, a unique blend of metal and composite materials against her fingertips, and she could sense a faint vibration from the liquid sloshing within.
Dr. Ford watched her with eager anticipation, his voice trembling with excitement. "Excellent! We can finally see for ourselves the effect of the Barrier Breaker Type I Potion when applied to a practical weapon!
If it’s effective—even if it only manages to disrupt the monster’s Ice and Snow Domain—it will be enough to prove we’re on the right path!
Our world... might actually be saved!"
Sharon Lynn tilted her small face upward, her wide eyes filled with admiration and a glimmer of naive hope. "Are... are you going... to fight the big snow monster and save the world?"
Seraphina almost laughed at the girl’s innocent words, but the mood was too grave.
She simply bent down, carefully tucking the thick curtain wrapped around Sharon Lynn’s body, and said gently, "I’m just going to see if our new secret weapon works.
You wait here quietly with Flora, Grandpa Ford, and Lucius. Don’t go outside, no matter what, okay?"
Flora immediately spoke up. "I’ll go help!"
Seraphina shook her head and reached out to ruffle her hair, but her gaze conveyed a clear command. "Flora, you’re staying here. Protect Dr. Ford and Sharon. Your mission is just as important."
Flora understood the meaning in Seraphina’s eyes.
’Her primary mission is to ensure the safety of the two key NPCs. That’s the core of the main quest.’
She pouted but still nodded obediently. "Then... you have to be careful. Come back safe!"
Chet Lucius handed Seraphina a small, custom-made magazine. Inside, nine more special-issue bullets were neatly arranged. Combined with the one already in Seraphina’s hand, that made exactly ten rounds.
"Ten rounds in total. If... and I mean if, it doesn’t have the desired effect, or if you just manage to piss that thing off, don’t push it.
Your safety comes first. You have to live to fight another day."
Chet Lucius looked at Seraphina, his tone earnest.
Though both had held back during their time working together, a genuine camaraderie—born from fighting side-by-side and relying on each other in a crisis—had quietly begun to blossom.
He genuinely hoped that this powerful and mysterious teammate would return safely.
Seraphina took the magazine and gave it a quick, efficient check. A confident smile touched her lips. "Don’t worry. I’m quite fond of this life of mine."
She paused, looking at Chet Lucius and Dr. Ford. "You two need to be careful, too.
If these bullets actually work, it’s likely to enrage the monster. That could trigger a more violent attack or... some other change. I’m counting on you to handle things here."
Chet Lucius thumped his chest. "Understood. I’ve got this. Go on, and come back quickly."
Seraphina nodded. Wasting no more words, she readied her magazine and sniper rifle, pulled her thermal clothing tight, and pushed open the laboratory door. Her figure quickly vanished into the dim, icy corridor.
Once she was out of sight and moving alone, she could drop some of the unnecessary pretenses.
She retrieved a small [Warm Crystal] from her Storage Space and clutched it in her hand.
A gentle warmth radiated from it, driving away the bone-deep chill and allowing her to move freely through the frozen landscape.
She moved quickly through the cluster of buildings, searching for the optimal sniping position.
She moved away from the school,
not wanting the battle to endanger Sharon Lynn and Dr. Ford.
She wasn’t worried about Flora and Chet Lucius.
’But the quest targets are ordinary mortals; the slightest mistake could get them killed.’
In the end, she chose the top floor of a relatively tall office building. It offered a wide field of view and was on the leeward side, which would minimize the wind and snow’s effect on her bullet’s trajectory.
Standing on the exposed rooftop, which was covered in a thick blanket of snow, gale-force winds howled past, carrying flurries of ice.
