A Guard attempted to intercept them.
Although Dexter Luther knew the Guard was just following procedure, he still shot him a fierce glare.
Gritting his teeth, he supported Matthew Dawson and charged out the gate.
A wave of heat rushed over them, as if countless scorching hands were tearing at their skin.
But not one of the three stopped.
Dexter Luther and the others hadn’t expected the extreme temperature disaster to be so vicious from the very beginning.
"It’s so hot! We need to hurry."
...
「On the surface, in the breeding zone.」
Seraphina Sullivan had no idea that two separate groups were rushing toward her.
She was sitting leisurely on a folding chair at the entrance of her RV.
In her hand was a long, thin wooden stick, which she was slowly rotating over a fire.
At the tip of the stick, a fluffy, soft white mass was slowly turning as the Flame licked at it, its edges turning a tempting golden-brown.
"Is it ready yet? Is it ready?"
Flora Sullivan was squatting beside her, her eyes glued to the marshmallow taking shape.
She was practically drooling.
"What’s the rush? Good things take time to roast."
Seraphina Sullivan said unhurriedly, giving the stick another turn.
Overhead, the Weather Cloud was still dutifully making it snow.
Fine snowflakes fell on the surrounding Four Seasons Deer and the roof of the RV.
Around the RV, a dozen or so Four Seasons Deer were lying down contentedly, some already dozing off.
In the distance, the siblings Frederick and Autumn Fuller were nowhere to be seen, having presumably hidden in the underground area.
The extreme temperature disaster enveloped the entire base.
But this small area seemed to have had the pause button pressed, so peaceful it was almost surreal.
"Sister, what do you think is happening with Dexter Luther and the others?" Flora suddenly asked.
Seraphina’s hands paused for a fraction of a second.
"They should be fine. Even if Dexter Luther’s Ability isn’t strong enough to defeat enemies, it’s more than enough for self-preservation."
She said, resuming the turning of the stick.
"The flow of time in the instance is different from reality. Sometimes you think a lot of time has passed, but only a few hours have gone by outside."
"Oh." Flora nodded, then stared eagerly at the marshmallow again. "So, can I eat it now?"
"Wait a little longer."
The marshmallow slowly spun over the flame, releasing a sweet fragrance.
The marshmallow was finally ready.
Flora took the stick and impatiently took a big bite.
The fluffy spun sugar melted on her tongue, and the sweetness exploded in her mouth.
She squinted, her little face taking on an expression of pure, bubbly bliss that only appeared when she ate something incredibly delicious.
"Mmm—! Delicious!"
She exclaimed indistinctly, her mouth stuffed full, not forgetting to take another bite.
Watching her greedy-cat expression, Seraphina couldn’t help but smile.
She picked up a roasted marshmallow for herself and took a gentle bite.
Sweet.
So sweet.
’This is the reason I fight so hard in the instances, struggle on the brink of life and death, and never dare to relax for even a moment.’
’It’s not to save the world, not for some grand cause.’
’It’s just so that I and the people around me can still have a bite to eat in this shitty apocalypse.’
’To hoard supplies and make life good.’
’That’s all.’
"If you like it, have some more," she said. "There’s plenty more in my Space."
"Someone’s coming."
Sean Chandler’s voice rang out calmly.
He had also taken a marshmallow, and after biting into it with a deadpan expression, he gazed into the distance.
Seraphina followed his gaze.
