Noah finished burying the dead, and THE Creature came to stand beside him without a word.
For a moment neither of them spoke. The graves stretched out across the whole Expanse, thousands upon thousands of small folds in the earth, and the rivers of Infinity ran on between the mountains as if nothing had happened here at all.
Then Noah spoke, slowly, turning the whole thing over aloud.
"An enemy like THE Sealed One is a very frustrating one, and I’ve had a great many enemies" He looked out over the field of graves.
"Most enemies, you come across them. You fight. One of you dies, the other walks away, and the matter is settled. Clean. Comprehensible. There’s a certain...ease and satisfaction to it, even when it’s trying to kill you." He shook his head slowly.
"The Sealed One one doesn’t do that. This one plays games. He runs. He kills everyone in the room except you, and then he hands you the bill for it and asks how it feels."
His eyes were bright!
"I had the plan to go around to his Vessels, wherever the beacons pointed and start pulling him apart one piece at a time. Force him to spend bodies. Bleed him slowly."
"But I’ve just seen what that plan will do. He will keep doing exactly what he did here. I’ll arrive, and everything living will fall down dead before I get to swing...and on and on."
He turned his gaze from the graves at last.
"So I’m not going to do that. I’m going to go get answers instead. Across Dimensions of Existence, and across Time." A thin, cold edge came into his voice. "And there, I suspect, there will be no shortage of adversity at all."
...!
THE Creature answered, but he was not looking at Noah when he did.
He was looking at the lifeform standing a little apart from them...he was gazing at Adrastia!
"Existence is vast," THE Creature said. "Vaster than either of us has words for. Even True Lifeforms and Primeval Lifeforms have never crossed the whole of it, across all the ages they’ve had to try. There are corners of it that have never once been walked." His burning eyes stayed fixed on the being before him.
"Anaximander is no longer here where we are. Our friend has begun moving across dimensions of his own. THE Sealed One is one thing, and a large thing. But he is not everything. He...is not Everything. He looms large, and also not so large. There are many oddities out there...."
WAA!
And as he said it, THE Creature kept looking at Adrastia.
Noah watched the exchange with quiet interest. This being, this Adrastia, had turned out to be one of the very few who had not dropped to his knees when THE Sealed One’s Intent first erupted across the Expanse and flattened everything below the Mesozoic Scale to their knees. He had stayed standing. And even now, under the gaze of THE Creature himself, his eyes were bright, steady, looking right back at the thing looking at him without flinching.
Noah blinked, and turned his focus onto Adrastia properly, wondering why THE Creature was giving this one so much of his attention.
"You two do know how terrifying it is to be stood next to people with your kind of power, right?" She had her hands on her hips, and none of the deference the rest of the survivors were showing.
"Like, genuinely. I was fucking scared for my life. So if we’re done here, doing the whole ominous staring thing at each other, can we please wrap it up and go?"
