<Anaximander>
They were moved across vast Distances relatively easily by The Ancestral Voice.
The four of them simply ceased to be in one valley and commenced to be in another.
And in here...was a citadel.
It stood at the center of this domain the way the pillar stood at the center of the last one, and it was under siege. Twelve Superpowered Lifeforms held the ground in front of it, and behind them, packed into the citadel and spilling out along its terraces, were the natives!
Hundreds of thousands of humans. Perhaps more. Ordinary lifeforms of THE Ymnaros, small and frightened and entirely without the grand strength their protectors carried!
Above the citadel, the Infinite True Lifeforms were arriving in ranks.
"There are...rather a lot of them," Anaximander observed.
"Yes." Hvitrmarr did not sound especially concerned about it. She stood beside him in her human shape with the nine First Causes drifting through her robe, and she was not looking at the enemy at all!
She was looking up and to her left, at the mountain of gray scars and severed hands standing behind them. "Although the rest of us do not even need to move, if you are here."
Damodred said nothing to that.
He regarded her for a long moment from behind the veil of ancient hands, and Anaximander had the distinct impression of a very old thing being paid a compliment and not knowing the current etiquette for it, and then the titan began to float down toward the field.
Since Anaximander had never seen him work, he watched carefully.
A sea began to form above the citadel. That was the only word for it, and it was gray, and it came out of nowhere. It gathered in a great swelling mass over the ranks of the Infinite, and where its underside boiled it did so slowly, with the awful patience of a thing that had been waiting ages to be poured out somewhere!
The Infinite True Lifeforms looked up.
Compared to the invaders in the gardens, these had the sense to understand what they were looking at, and Anaximander watched several of them make the correct decision and begin to withdraw, which was interesting because it did not help them!
The sea came down.
And everything the descending gray touched began to calcify.
Where the gray fell across an Infinite True Lifeform, the compounding of Infinity stopped compounding.
Their Infinity, which by its nature was a thing that only ever became more, was simply frozen at whatever quantity it happened to be holding!
Anaximander was about to follow since it seemed only reasonable to make himself useful, when a voice arrived from everywhere at once.
You will have to come in another direction, little guy.
...!
Anaximander stopped where he was.
"Where?" he asked, and then, because the first question was less interesting than the second, "Why?"
Because you are wasted here, and because I have spent enough ages watching things be wasted.
Also, you are like us. You would have been a good candidate for THE Aurate Collar of the First Purity. Genuinely good. Better than most of my own line....
"But not good enough."
You would have failed.
The voice said it flatly!
You would have walked the road, and passed the first, and probably passed the second, and then failed at the last step, exactly as we failed at the last step. Every one of us. Ages of candidates and not one made it past the end of it.
"Then may I ask what the last step is?"
No.
"..."
But...
For all those of us who failed. Could you pick up the pieces?
"Yes," he said. "All right."
...!
Half buried in that sea were the titans.
