Noah turned his endlessly blue eyes from the city to the woman holding his hand.
Every measurement he held of Thalia Vasiliou had been taken during a catastrophe. There was the day she fell out of a white pool, bleeding on his grass.
There was the hour her edges flickered, causality collecting its toll. There was the moment she wept because he did not remember her.
All of his data came from her worst hours.
Here, she was home, and whole, and merged!
So he activated THE Protagonist’s Omniscient Regard. For the first time since the pool, her existence answered him.

POTENTIA: 99
PONDUS: 99
(Current values are weakened. The toll of movement across Dimensions and Time continues to suppress the True standing of this existence.)
He read the panel once. Ninety-nine, four times, and beneath the columns a parenthesis stating that the numbers were a floor.
The woman whose hand sat warm in his stood thirty points above him on every axis while actively suppressed. Her true standing lived somewhere he had not yet learned to measure!
He had gotten himself a powerful woman!
He thought of THE TRANSFINITE VERSE and THE INEFFABLE VERSE when he looked at these numbers.
What was one hundred? Was one hundred where the shore ended and the Verse simply began? Did an existence at one hundred stop touching THE INEFFABLE and start standing inside it? Was the woman beside him one point of suppression away from a different order of reality?
He did not know!
Rosalia turned around.
Her unreadable eyes went to their joined hands, to her daughter’s fingers laced through the fingers of a supposed First Tier vessel, and she shook her head once, slowly.
Mothers had performed this motion for as long as daughters had chosen someone they did not approve of. Rosalia performed it too! Then she waved her imperial hand.
WAA!
The road was gone soon after. The three of them became streaks of light, and Noah observed their trajectory with mild interest, because the streaks did not bend toward the climbing tiers of Vasileia or the red-gold fortress at its crown.
They arced past the entire city, toward the mountain behind it.
—
They stood on bare dark stone at the mountain’s foot. Above them, the falls of essence descended without sound.
Ahead, spanning the base of the mountain from end to end, a boundary of solid golden light rose out of the ground in a single sheer curtain, taller than the city’s highest tower, its surface moving with slow internal currents that had not stopped moving since before the rulings were weighed.
Stellar gold trees grew across the approach in quiet groves. Their canopies burned softly with the essence the mountain shed, and the light came down through the branches and lay on the stone in slow-moving patches.
Among the trees, spaced in silent intervals before the boundary, Provenance Lifeforms floated like statues.
"Mother." Her voice was level. "Why are we at the Provenance Vasiliou Elsemountain? Father and the others should be gathered in the Provenance Tower. That is where the Lineage receives."
"Very few Provenance Lifeforms can enter the Vasiliou Elsemountain," Thalia continued, and her grip on his hand tightened by a measurable degree. "Even of our own lineage. The boundary admits extremely high Dimensionality, or a unique Provenance, and nothing else. It does not care for names. It does not care for blood."
"Are you trying to embarrass us, Mother?"
"The least he can do," Rosalia said, "is be exceptional enough to enter a mountain."
HUUM!
"If he cannot do even this, then you have already chosen wrong, and it is better that everyone learns it at the door instead of in the hall. I told your Father and the Vasiliou Provenance Elders that I would bring you here. So everyone has gathered here."
"I sure do hope this will not be the last place your chosen is able to step into. It is only passing through a barrier and entering a mountain. A simple task, surely, for someone who is supposedly a grander choice than an Immense One. Right?"
