THE REMINISCING WIDOW speaks: you know what? I will leave it entirely up to chance.
The frost held its stillness across the whole of the spring as the golden halos turned!
You are throwing arguments that you are like Vakochev. Or like someone you cannot even fathom. Someone whose name you have not earned the right to hold in your mouth.
Okay.
Let us put that to the test.
She waved her hand!
BOOM!
A blinding singularity bloomed in the frozen air above the spring, and Noah’s eyes narrowed against it as the light collapsed inward on itself and left something spinning slowly in the space where it had been!
A ring.
It was gray, and it was small, and it was the least impressive object Noah had ever seen an Immense One produce.
It turned in the air without hurry, and across its outer band ran lines that did not behave, lines that went around the ring and came back on the other side without ever crossing an edge, an outside that was also the inside, a single unbroken surface pretending to be two.
And on its interior, where a finger would go, there were spikes!
They filled the inner circumference completely, dozens of them, gray and sharp and angled inward toward the center, leaving no opening at all. Not a narrow opening. Not a difficult one.
None.
It was a ring that could not be worn, and it had been made that way on purpose.
This was left behind by a special someone.
The Widow’s voice pressed into the frozen air from everywhere at once.
I have not been able to figure it out. Neither has any other Immense One I have given it to, and I have given it to several, across a great many eras. It has been examined by minds that predate the frameworks you climb.
If you wish to throw arguments that you are like others, if you wish to compare yourself to them...
Put this ring on.
The gold of her eyes did not move from him.
If you can put that ring on, I will spare you. You may continue your path. The path that will inevitably lead to more deaths than you will ever be able to count.
...!
The ring drifted toward him through the frozen steam.
Noah watched it come, and his gaze became heavy.
How the hell would he be able to put on a ring that even Immense Ones could not figure out?!
They had eras. He had a conversation! They had Dimensionality that made his own look like a puddle beside a sea, and they had turned this small gray thing over in their attention and set it back down without an answer!
The ring reached him.
Noah’s hand rose out of the frozen water and closed around it, and it was cold, and it was heavier than it had any right to be, and the spikes pressed against his palm.
THE REMINISCING WIDOW looked down at him coldly.
Well? Put it on.
You are just like them, are you not? Like Vakochev. Like the one whose foundations I watched be broken.
There will be no thinking you can talk your way out of this after. You have had your conversation. If the ring does not go on, there will simply be a thorough narrative ending for all parts of your existence, across every point of origin you have ever occupied.
