"Let's go." Jared started toward the southwest without waiting for anyone else.
Cedric followed behind him, with more than a dozen cultivators from the Abyssal Exchange close on his heels.
The group moved across the gray-white earth at a steady pace, neither fast nor slow.
Jared kept his spirit sense stretched to its limit the entire time. Everything within a hundred miles stayed inside his awareness.
About an hour into the march, something brushed against his spirit sense.
Jared stopped dead.
"Someone's here." His voice came out cold.
Cedric's expression changed. "Who?"
"The celestials." Jared turned, his violet eyes fixed on the north. "Five sky-barges. Fifty people. They caught up to us."
The color drained completely from Cedric's face.
Claire had taken a dozen or so people to intercept fifty celestial cultivators, and she had failed.
She was already dead.
Something complicated flickered through Cedric's red-gold eyes, but only for an instant.
Then his face went still again.
"How many?" he asked.
"Fifty. The strongest is Golden Immortal Level Four. Two are Golden Immortal Level Three. The rest are Golden Immortal Levels One and Two." Jared sounded perfectly calm, as if he were stating nothing more than a simple fact.
Cedric went silent for a moment, then looked at Jared.
"Mr. Chance, can we take them?"
Jared met his gaze. There was no fear in those red-gold eyes. No hesitation either.
Only calculation, cold and absolute.
Cedric was weighing the odds.
Fifty celestial cultivators. One at Golden Immortal Level Four, two at Golden Immortal Level Three, and the rest at Levels One and Two.
On their side, even counting Jared, they only had a little over a dozen people. The strongest among them were Cedric himself at Golden Immortal Level Four, and Jared at True Immortal Realm Level Eight.
If they fought head-on, their chances were almost zero.
But with Jared's chaotic force, with the terrain of the Ancient Battlefield, and with a little strategy...
There was still a chance.
"We can fight," Jared said evenly. "But I'll need your cooperation, Master Blackwell."
Cedric nodded. "Just tell me what you need, Mr. Chance."
Jared turned and looked out toward the horizon.
Out there, five black sky-barges were racing closer, the golden saintlight sigils flashing across their hulls with a blinding glare.
"This Ancient Battlefield is full of sleeping ancient remnant souls. If we can stir them up and make the celestials deal with them..."
Jared's voice stayed level, but there was something in it cold enough to make the skin crawl.
"Fifty of them won't be enough for those remnant souls to kill."
A sharp light flashed through Cedric's eyes.
"Brilliant, Mr. Chance." There was real respect in Cedric's voice now. "I'll make the arrangements right away."
Cedric turned and gave a quick series of orders to the cultivators of the Abyssal Exchange behind him.
They scattered at once, vanishing across the gray-white wasteland.
Jared stood alone on a rise, the Dragonslayer Sword hanging at his waist, his violet eyes fixed on the black sky-barges in the distance.
They kept coming.
Closer and closer.
500 miles. 300 miles. 100 miles.
When they were less than 50 miles away, the sky-barges stopped.
All five vessels hung in the air as golden saintlight sigils flared wildly across their hulls, as if probing the surrounding terrain.
Then the people aboard spotted Jared.
Fifty celestial cultivators leaped down from the sky-barges.
Golden saintlight blazed around them, washing the whole sky in gold.
At their head was a middle-aged man in golden war-panoply, a golden spear in his hand, saintlight flame dancing at its tip.
Golden Immortal Level Four.
Behind him stood two Golden Immortal Level Three cultivators—one carrying twin blades, the other a longbow.
Both wore the same hard, killing look.
The middle-aged man looked at Jared, and contempt curled at the corner of his mouth.
"You're Jared?"
Jared didn't answer.
He only looked back at them.
"I am Florian, Vice Court Master of the Ember God Palace." His voice dripped with arrogant superiority. "By order of the Court Master, I am here to take your life. Will you end it yourself, or do I have to do it for you?"
