Ghost Seven stood half a step behind him, shock churning in his own blue eyes. "Mr. Chance's chaotic force is the source of all laws. Nether energy is an expression of law as well. Before him... it must ultimately return to the origin."
The nether energy continued pouring out for six full hours.
From dusk into the depths of night, and on toward dawn, yet black blood continued to pour from the fissure as if from an unhealed wound.
Jared stood before it like a silent fortress, blocking, devouring, and dissolving the entire onslaught of darkness.
His face had grown pale, and tiny beads of sweat covered his brow. They slid from his jaw and struck the black rock with almost inaudible taps.
Yet his violet eyes only grew brighter, like gems polished again and again until they cast a profound gleam through the dark red light.
The chaotic flame within him burned ever hotter and purer. Every breath carried a nearly invisible thread of gray mist from his lips.
Master Veridian crouched beside a distant rope bridge. He had replaced the dry stalk between his teeth several times because his nervous chewing kept reducing each one to pulp.
His cloudy eyes never left Jared, and they held a rare degree of seriousness and admiration.
He muttered, "Good grief... That boy really can swallow it all... I've lived my whole life and never seen anyone eat nether energy like a meal. If those celestial cultivators saw this, they'd probably cough up blood from sheer frustration..."
The young acolyte squatted beside him with his chin propped in both hands, his small face solemn. "Master, Mr. Chance is amazing."
"Obviously. Someone ordinary couldn't give orders to your own master, could he?"
Master Veridian tapped the child on the head, though he used very little force. "Pay attention. Someday, you should be capable of this too."
The young acolyte stuck out his lower lip. "I don't ever want to eat that stuff... Just looking at it frightens me..."
"No ambition!" Master Veridian gave him another tap.
At dawn, the flow of nether energy from the fissure finally began to weaken.
First, it visibly faded from an ink-thick black to charcoal gray, like diluted ink.
Then it paled to the color of morning mist.
At last, only a few gossamer strands drifted from the fissure's edge and dispersed on their own, like the first summer sunlight banishing the final veil of fog.
Jared slowly concluded the technique. Gray chaotic force circled his body once before returning to his core.
The surrounding radiance receded like the tide and revealed his slightly pallid face.
He expelled a long breath of impure air. It shot outward like a black arrow with a faint hiss, leaving a dark trail that lingered for a long time.
Although some pallor remained, the gleam in his eyes was far brighter than before. He resembled a blade tempered and polished repeatedly. Its surface had not fully regained its luster, but its keen edge could already be felt.
Heat pulsed through his meridians as if they were metal conduits pulled from a forge. Rest would be needed before they returned to normal.
Yet the heat brought a sense of fullness unlike anything he had experienced. His chaotic force seemed infused with new life, circulating faster and reaching a greater degree of refinement.
"The surge has ended."
Jared turned toward the wide-eyed Ghost Clan cultivators. His voice carried a trace of fatigue but remained calm. "No more nether energy will emerge for the time being."
