Chapter 121
I nodded, a small surge of pride warming my chest despite my
annoyance at being discovered. “It took some experimentation to get
the balance right.”
“Not to sound dramatic, but you were born for this,” Lisa said
earnestly. “There’s something almost… wild about your work. Like it’s
tapping into something primal but still elegant.”
I caught the subtle comparison in her words–she was noting
similarities between my style and Aurora’s, the pseudonym I’d used
for my previous award–winning designs. Her instincts were good,
maybe too good.
–“Every designer has their own signature,” I explained carefully. “Our
work reflects who we are, even as our style evolves over time. Even
the same person might create very different pieces at different points
in their life.”
Lisa nodded thoughtfully, accepting my yague response. I could
almost see her mind working, connecting dots without quite reaching
the conclusion.
From the corner of my eye, I noticed Megan emerging from her office.
She stopped abruptly when she saw my designs, her body tensing

visibly. The shock in her eyes quickly hardened into something
darker, more hostile.
She didn’t think I was capable of this level of work, I realized, watching
her reaction. She’s seeing me as a threat for the first time.
I pretended not to notice her stare, but my wolf senses picked up on
her increased heart rate, the subtle shift in her scent that indicated
agitation. When she finally moved away, her shoulders were rigid, her
steps just a little too measured.
A few minutes later, I heard the faint sound of whispering. Glancing
up, I caught Megan watching me through the partially open blinds of
her office. She had her phone pressed to her ear, her expression
intense.
My heightened hearing caught fragments: “Stone” and “suspicious”
among a stream of hushed words. She was talking about me, possibly
to someone who could cause trouble.
I looked down at my designs, then at the resignation letter in my bag.
Why wait? Let’s give her a surprise she won’t forget.
I carefully organized my desk, placed my designs back in my
portfolio, and retrieved the sealed envelope containing my
resignation letter. The paper felt substantial between my fingers, the

weight of my decision suddenly very real.
Standing up, I walked purposefully toward Megan’s office, aware of
curious glances from my colleagues. Their whispers followed me, but
I kept my focus forward, my steps steady.
Without knocking, I pushed open Megan’s door. She looked up,
surprised by my sudden appearance, and quickly ended her call.
“Iris? What can I do for you?” Her voice was falsely sweet, her smile
not reaching her eyes.
“Megan,” I said evenly, extending the envelope toward her. “I’m here
to give you my resignation letter.”
Her expression flickered between shock and poorly concealed delight.
“Resignation? But why?”
“My internship ends next week, and I’m here to formally notify you
that I will not be continuing with the company afterward,” I explained, keeping my tone neutral despite the satisfaction bubbling
inside me.
Megan took the envelope, her fingers brushing mine in what I knew was a deliberate attempt to catch my scent. “This is… unexpected,”
she said, though her eyes told a different story.
