The glass pressed against her skin, not enough to cut, but enough to threaten. Tris Stone is my mate. You aren’t fit to speak her name, let

alone dream of taking her place.

I stood up, deliberately letting the glass shard graze her cheek as I release it. A thin line of red appeared on her pale skin.

The next time any of you decide to run your mouths about Iris Stone, announced to the room, my voice carrying to the silent bar beyond,

you’ll be looking for a new territory. Far from Moonshade Bay.

I walked out, ignoring the whispers that followed me. The night air hit my face, cool against my flushed skin. My breathing was still rapid, my

heart pounding against my ribs.

What the hell just happened? Why did I react that way?

I got into my car and sat there, staring at the steering wheel. My hand was still bleeding, the cuts already starting to heal with my wolf’s

accelerated abilities.

Was it just my pride? The fact that only I should have the right to hurt her? Or was it something deepersomething I wasn’t ready to

acknowledge?

I went back home, questions swirling in my mind. The house was dark when I arrived, just a single lamp burning in the foyer. I made my way

upstairs, my footsteps silent on the thick carpet.

I paused outside our bedroom doorno, her bedroom door. We hadn’t shared a room in nearly two years, not really. I pushed it open slowly,

careful not to make a sound.

Iris was asleep, her back to the door, golden hair spread across the pillow. The blanket outlined her small frame, rising and falling with each breath. She looked so fragile like this. So different from the woman who’d stood her ground at the office, who’d faced my grandfather’s anger

without flinching.

A phone on the nightstand lit up with a notification. Her phone.

I moved closer, telling myself I was just checking to make sure the light wouldn’t wake her. The message preview showed on the lock screen:

Noah Phillips: Are you really going to stay with the Grey pack?

Something hot and ugly twisted in my gut. I picked up the phone, easily unlocking itshe still used her mother’s birthday as her passcode,

something I’d noticed years ago.

I scrolled through the messages between her and Noah:

Noah: Are you okay? Don’t listen to what those wolves are saying. They don’t know you.

Noah: You shouldn’t read the pack chat if it upsets you.

Iris: I’m not taking it to heart.

Noah: Are you really going to stay with the Grey pack?

responses were short, almost cold. But the fact that the was talking trim at all made my teath clench, What right did foab Phillips have to check en her? Th comfort hers

sidered what else they’d discussed. Had the deleted messages? Was there more between them than these innocent seeming texta?

The thought of Noah or any other wolftrying to claim what was mine made my vision blur with rage. I’d seen how he looked at her in high
