Chapter 155
I was stirring my drink when Marcus Foster appeared in the doorway, his face lighting up when he saw me.
“Iris! Perfect timing. I was just looking for you,‘ he said, adjusting his glasses. “The competition starts in twenty minutes. Have you reviewed the bar?
I nodded. ‘I have. I see Miles is participating.”
Marcus’s expression grew serious. “Yes. I wanted to talk to you about that, actually. Given your history at Polaris-
“It’s fine, Marcus,‘ I interrupted smoothly. “That was a long time ago. I’m here as a professional consultant.”
He studied my face for a moment before nodding. ‘If you’re sure. But if he makes you uncomfortable at any point-
“I can handle Miles,” I said firmly, taking a sip of my coffee. “Don’t worry about me.”
Marcus smiled. “I know you can. Just remember, this is your territory now.”
As he walked away, I felt a small smile tug at my lips. Yes, this was my territory now. How things had changed.
I was heading toward the meeting room when Marcus called out to me.
“Oh, Iris!”
I turned back with a small smile. “Marcus.”
He beamed and continued down the hallway. I followed at a leisurely pace, my heels clicking confidently against the floor. As I rounded the corner, I caught sight of Miles entering the meeting room ahead of me. Even from behind, I recognized his carefully styled dark hair and expensive suit. He walked with that same swagger, greeting people with what I knew would be that practiced, insincere smile.
My heart rate picked up slightly, but I took a deep breath. I wouldn’t allow him to affect me. Not anymore. I straightened my shoulders and approached the meeting room entrance with deliberate steps.
As I stepped into the doorway, I saw the exact moment Miles noticed me. His eyes widened slightly, and that fake smile froze on his face. I met his gaze steadily and gave him a small, confident nod of acknowledgment as I walked in.
The room was nearly full, with designers and judges taking their seats around the large conference table. I made my way to an empty chair, aware of Miles’s eyes following me. The air felt charged with tension that only he and I could sense.
Just as I was about to sit down, Miles’s voice cut through the pre–meeting chatter.
“Well, look who it is,” he said loudly enough for everyone to hear. ‘Hand healed up that fast, did it?”
The conversations around us died down as people turned to look. I felt multiple pairs of eyes on me, but I kept my expression neutral as I met Miles’s gaze.
“Yes,” I replied coolly. “It has. Completely, in fact.”
Miles’s eyes narrowed. “Convenient timing. Wasn’t it your injured hand that had you running from Polaris? And now here you are, designing away at
Crescent. Did you tell them about your… condition?”

I could feel the curiosity of everyone in the room, their gazes shifting between Miles and me like spectators at a tennis match. But I refused to play into his hands. Instead, I simply looked at him, my expression calm and unwavering.
The memories of that night flashed through my mind–the company party, the drugged drink Miles had offered me, my instinctive shift to wolf form when ! felt threatened, the injury I’d sustained defending myself. I remembered the weeks of therapy, the pain when I tried to hold a pencil, the fear that I might never design again.
But those days were behind me now.
I smiled at Miles, a smile that didn’t reach my eyes. “I don’t just design here, Miles. I consult. And yes, my hand works perfectly fine now. In fact, I added. leaning forward slightly, my voice dropping to a level that only he could hear, my strength has fully returned too. Would you like another demonstration? I
