I walked calmly to the nearest empty chair and sat down, crossing my legs and placing my folder on the table. Their outrage was like white noise–meaningless and ultimately powerless. I watched them perform, noting how their faces grew redder, how spittle flew from
Thomas’s mouth as he worked himself into a frenzy.
“Are you even listening?” Peter stepped closer, his finger pointing at me accusingly. “I said get out. Now.”
I tilted my head slightly. “When my father was alive, you never would have dared speak to me that way,” I observed quietly. “Interesting how quickly things change when you think I have no power.”
My calm response seemed to unnerve him. Good.
“You’re testing my patience,” Thomas growled, slamming his hand on the table. “If you don’t leave immediately-”
I’d had enough. I stood up, retrieved the folder, and tossed it across the table. It slid perfectly, coming to rest directly in front of Thomas.
“Open it,” I instructed.
Thomas glared at me, then at the folder. Suspicion crossed his features, but curiosity won out. He flipped it open, his eyes scanning the
first page.
I watched the blood drain from his face.
“This… this can’t be legal,” he whispered.
