The taxi pulled up to the entrance of Blue Harbor, and I felt my shoulders relax for the first time in weeks. Finally. Away from Grey Manor.
Away from Sebastien’s cold stares and that suffocating atmosphere where every breath I took seemed to be monitored by someone.
“This is it,” I told the driver, handing him the fare plus a generous tip. “Thanks for the help with the suitcases.”
As the taxi disappeared down the tree–lined street, I stood in front of my new building, taking it all in. Blue Harbor was the perfect buffer zone between the human world and the wolf community–close enough to Crescent Design for work, but also not too far from the pack territories if I ever needed… well, I wouldn’t need them. That was the whole point.
I punched in the security code and entered the building. The private elevator required a key fob, which I appreciated. No unwanted visitors. No accidental scent encounters with other wolves. No fake smiles or whispers behind my back.
“Home sweet home,” I whispered to myself as the elevator doors opened directly into my new apartment.
The place was spacious, modern, and most importantly, mine. I walked from room to room, running my hands over surfaces, opening windows to air out the lingering scent of cleaning products.
When I reached the balcony, I stepped outside and took a deep breath. Freedom. It smelled like fresh air and possibility.
“Oh my, is that someone new?”
The voice startled me. I looked over to see an elderly man on the neighboring balcony, pruning some potted plants.
“I haven’t seen anyone live in that unit for ages,” he continued with a friendly smile. “What a pleasant surprise!”
I hesitated before answering. Wolf instincts die hard–reveal nothing, protect the pack. But there was something genuinely warm about this old
man.
“Yes, I just moved in today,” I replied, keeping my voice pleasant but vague “I was staying with relatives before.”
No need to mention which relatives or that they were wolves. No need to explain I was running from a failed marriage to one of the most powerful Alphas–in–waiting in the region.
“Well, welcome to the neighborhood!” He beamed. “I’m Jack, been here fifteen years. It’s quiet, but that’s what I like about it.”
“Thank you. I’m looking forward to the quiet.”
“You must come over for tea sometime. An old man gets lonely for conversation.”
“That’s very kind of you,” I said, already backing toward my door. “I should unpack now. Nice meeting you, Jack.”
Back inside, I locked the balcony door and leaned against it. A human neighbor. Perfect. No wolf would detect my changing scent or ask uncomfortable questions about my personal life.
I started unpacking my things, pleased to find the apartment had been thoroughly cleaned. The housekeeping service had done their job well– no lingering scents of previous tenants, no dust in corners.

My plane vibrated in my pocket, Rachel’s name flashed on the screen along with several missed calls from earlier.
Hello?‘

Where the hell have you been?‘ Rachel’s voice was half–concerned, half–annoyed. “I’ve been trying to reach you all afternoon!”
‘Sorry, I said, wedging the phone between my ear and shoulder as I continued unpacking. “I was busy moving out of Grey Manor. I’m in my new place now.”
“You actually did it?‘ Her tone shifted to excitement. “You’re really out of that den of wolves? Thank God!”
