Chapter 56
His gaze swept across the empty department. “Didn’t Megan invite
everyone to dinner to celebrate? Why aren’t you there?”
I let out a short, humorless laugh. “Apparently I’m not important
enough for the creative director’s dinner party. Some of us have
‘urgent‘ paperwork to complete.” I gestured to the stack of
documents.
Sebastien’s jaw tightened. I could almost see the wheels turning
behind his eyes.
“Get your things,” he said abruptly. “I’m driving you home.”
I frowned. “I can manage on my own. I need to finish this by
tomorrow anyway.”
“It’s nearly nine, and you shouldn’t be alone in the building this late,”
he replied, his voice dropping into that commanding Alpha tone.
“Why are you suddenly concerned about my safety?” I asked,
genuinely puzzled. “This is the second time you’ve insisted on driving
me home this week. What’s going on?”

Something flickered in his eyes–concern? Worry? It vanished so
quickly I couldn’t be sure.
“The area’s not safe right now,” he said after a moment’s hesitation.
“There have been… incidents.”
My mind immediately flashed to Jack’s bloodied body, the claw marks,

stop it.
He didn’t answer directly. “Just get your things. I’ll wait.”
As I gathered my belongings, my mind raced. Was Sebastien actually
concerned for my safety, or was this another power play? The attack
on Jack hadn’t seemed random, and now Sebastien’s sudden
protectiveness…

Were the incidents connected? And if they were, why wouldn’t he just
tell me what he knew?
The car ride was excruciating. I pressed myself against the passenger door, creating as much distance as possible between us in the
confined space. The silence was thick enough to cut with a knife.
“You should have sat in the back, Sebastien said suddenly, his eyes
fixed on the road.
“What?”
“You should have sat in the back seat instead of up front,” he
repeated, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. “People are
watching.”
I let out a sharp laugh. “Seriously? We’re already getting divorced, and
you’re worried about appearances?”
He didn’t answer, and I turned to stare out the window, watching the
city blur past. We were each trapped in our own thoughts, sharing
nothing but awkward silence and the remnants of what was supposed
to be a marriage.
Pulling up to Grey Manor for the second time in twenty–four hours
felt no less strange. The house remained as imposing and cold as it
