Chapter 56
His gaze swept across the empty department. “Didn’t Megan invite
everyone to dinner to celebrate? Why aren’t you there?”
I let out a short, humorless laugh. “Apparently I’m not important
enough for the creative director’s dinner party. Some of us have
‘urgent‘ paperwork to complete.” I gestured to the stack of
documents.
Sebastien’s jaw tightened. I could almost see the wheels turning
behind his eyes.
“Get your things,” he said abruptly. “I’m driving you home.”
I frowned. “I can manage on my own. I need to finish this by
tomorrow anyway.”
“It’s nearly nine, and you shouldn’t be alone in the building this late,”
he replied, his voice dropping into that commanding Alpha tone.
“Why are you suddenly concerned about my safety?” I asked,
genuinely puzzled. “This is the second time you’ve insisted on driving
me home this week. What’s going on?”

Something flickered in his eyes–concern? Worry? It vanished so
quickly I couldn’t be sure.
“The area’s not safe right now,” he said after a moment’s hesitation.
“There have been… incidents.”
My mind immediately flashed to Jack’s bloodied body, the claw marks,
the sense of another wolf lurking in the shadows. My pulse
quickened.
“What kind of incidents?” I pressed, studying his face. “Does this have
anything to do with what happened to Jack Lowell?”
Sebastien’s expression tightened. “You need to be more careful. That’s
all I’m saying.”
“Are you… protecting me?” The question slipped out before I could
stop it.
He didn’t answer directly. “Just get your things. I’ll wait.”
As I gathered my belongings, my mind raced. Was Sebastien actually
concerned for my safety, or was this another power play? The attack
on Jack hadn’t seemed random, and now Sebastien’s sudden
protectiveness…

Were the incidents connected? And if they were, why wouldn’t he just
tell me what he knew?
The car ride was excruciating. I pressed myself against the passenger door, creating as much distance as possible between us in the
confined space. The silence was thick enough to cut with a knife.
“You should have sat in the back, Sebastien said suddenly, his eyes
fixed on the road.
“What?”
“You should have sat in the back seat instead of up front,” he
repeated, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. “People are
watching.”
I let out a sharp laugh. “Seriously? We’re already getting divorced, and
you’re worried about appearances?”
He didn’t answer, and I turned to stare out the window, watching the
city blur past. We were each trapped in our own thoughts, sharing
nothing but awkward silence and the remnants of what was supposed
to be a marriage.
Pulling up to Grey Manor for the second time in twenty–four hours
felt no less strange. The house remained as imposing and cold as it

had been this morning.
William was waiting at the entrance, his tall figure silhouetted
against the warm light spilling from the grand doorway. Despite his age, he still carried himself with the unmistakable authority of a pack
Alpha.
“Iris!” he called out. His weathered face broke into a genuine smile as I approached. “How’s work treating you? Any problems I should know
about?”
His warm greeting was such a stark contrast to Sebastien’s cold demeanor that I couldn’t help but return his smile.
“I’m doing fine, William,” I assured him, accepting his brief hug.
“Work is… interesting.”
I caught the calculating gaze of Sebastien’s uncle over William’s shoulder. His lip curled slightly as he took in my simple work attire.
“I heard your little design company is working with North Star Studio now,” he commented, his tone condescending. “A cross–pack collaboration is always… risky. Best be careful about certain unsavory influences. The Grey pack’s standing can’t afford to be compromised.”
The implication was clear–he thought I’d used my connection to the

“With all due respect,” I replied evenly, “my designs were selected on
merit, not connections. Something I’m sure is difficult for some to
understand.”
