Chapter 74
“You know what, Megan?” I said, turning to face her directly.
“Sometimes I really admire you.”
She blinked, clearly thrown by my unexpected response. “What?”
I studied her carefully, noting how she shifted her weight
uncomfortably. My instincts were rarely wrong, and right now they
were screaming that I’d stumbled onto something important.
“Some people think they’re so clever,” I continued, testing my theory.
“They accidentally discover someone else’s private business and start
making all this noise. But they never stop to think that maybe their
own secrets aren’t as well hidden as they believe.”
The slight widening of her pupils told me everything I needed to
know. Her scent spiked with fear–just for a moment–before she
controlled it.
“What are you talking about?” she snapped, her voice higher than
normal. “You’re the one with secrets to hide.”
I leaned against the counter, feeling a surge of confidence. “Am I?
That’s interesting coming from someone who seems awfully

concerned about medical privacy. Tell me, Megan, what exactly
brought you to that hospital wing the other day? Just a coincidence?”
Her face paled slightly, confirming my suspicions. “You’re delusional.
I don’t have to explain myself to you.”
“No, you don’t,” I agreed pleasantly. “But I wonder what others would
think if they knew the truth. Is it more shameful for me to be
pregnant with my legal mate’s child, or for you to have contracted a
human disease through… what should we call it? Indiscretion?”
I was completely bullshitting based on her reaction and body
language, but her face drained of all color. Bull’s–eye.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about,” she hissed, but her
confidence was crumbling.
“Don’t I?” I pushed away from the counter, standing taller. “Let me
ask you something, Megan. Which do you think is more embarrassing
-me carrying the legitimate heir to the Grey bloodline, or you
explaining to the wolf community how you managed to catch a
human STD? We both know how the council feels about wolves who…
mingle too freely with humans.”
Her hand trembled slightly as she pointed a finger at me. “You
wouldn’t dare.”

“What are you going to do about it?” I asked, holding her gaze
steadily. “The Grey family won’t believe you over me.”
“This isn’t over,” she warned, though her voice lacked conviction.
I picked up my clutch, feeling strangely calm. “I’ve already warned you once. Keep threatening me, and I won’t need to say a word to anyone. We can just take a trip to the hospital together and let the tests speak for themselves. I’m sure the wolf council would be very
interested in the results.”
I walked past her, enjoying how she shrank back slightly. “Your secret is safe with me–as long as you keep your distance.”
The bathroom door swung shut behind me, and I took a deep breath. I hadn’t planned that confrontation, but something told me Megan
wouldn’t be a problem for a while.
Back in the main hall, I scanned the crowd, hoping to avoid Sebastien. No such luck. He stood exactly where I’d left him, his eyes finding mine immediately. It was like he’d been waiting, tracking my
movements. I pretended not to notice and turned in another
direction.
I felt him before I heard him, his presence like a shadow at my back. His hand settled at my waist, a gesture that might have looked
