Chapter 76
I nodded, not bothering to look at him. “Fine by me,” I thought,
relieved to have a moment without his oppressive presence. “I’d rather stand alone than keep pretending we’re a happy couple
anyway.”
I watched as Sebastien made his way through the crowd toward Jack
Lowell. Even from behind, his confidence was evident in the set of his
shoulders and the easy way people parted for him. He greeted Jack
with the perfect balance of respect and familiarity—the Grey heir
acknowledging another powerful bloodline without appearing
subservient.
“He plays this game so well,” I thought grudgingly. “Like he was born
for it.” Which, of course, he was.
A burst of feminine laughter caught my attention. Not far from me,
Megan Claire stood with several female werewolves, all of them
repeatedly glancing in my direction. I didn’t need enhanced hearing
to know I was the subject of their gossip, but unfortunately, my wolf
senses picked up Megan’s voice anyway.
“Look at her just standing there,” Megan said, her tone dripping with
false sympathy. “Sebastien didn’t even take her with him to meet Jack.
That says everything about their relationship, doesn’t it?”

I fought the urge to roll my eyes. “Does she really think I care?” I
wondered, a cold smile playing at my lips. “If anything, I wish
Sebastien would stay over there permanently.”
I surveyed the room, taking in the elegant decorations, the expensive
clothes, the practiced smiles. Everyone playing their part in this
elaborate social theater. My hand moved unconsciously to my
stomach, thinking of the life growing inside me–a life that would
never know this kind of artificial existence if I had anything to say
about it.
“God, these events are exhausting,” I thought, watching two
businessmen exchange cards while praising each other’s companies
with obvious insincerity. “The longer I stand here, the more I’m
convinced this isn’t the world I want for my babies.”
As the evening progressed, I noticed Jack Lowell and his family beginning to say their goodbyes to guests. The celebration was
winding down. I felt relief wash over me at the thought of finally
leaving this place with its suffocating formality.
Sebastien materialized at my side, his sudden presence making me
flinch involuntarily. My hand instinctively rose to my chin where his
fingers had gripped earlier, the memory of his touch still
uncomfortably fresh.
“Time to go,” he said, his voice neutral but his eyes scanning the room

as if checking who might be watching us.
I nodded and stood, careful to maintain some distance between us.
The earlier confrontation had left me on edge, hyperaware of every
movement he made. Noticing Megan still watching us from across the
room, her eyes fixed on Sebastien with naked longing, a petty impulse
seized me–a desire to unsettle him as he’d done to me.
“Megan’s eyes are practically glued to you,” I said, a sweet venom in
my voice. “Better hurry home and comfort your old flame later.” I
smiled innocently, enjoying the momentary flash of cold anger in his
eyes as he glanced in Megan’s direction.
