Sebastien’s POV
I sat rigidly in the back seat of the car, my gaze fixed on the empty
road ahead. My fingers drummed against my thigh as the memory of
Iris’s words echoed in my head: “When are we going to finish the
paperwork? Tomorrow works for me.”
She was eager to be rid of me. Tomorrow. Not next week, not after
she’d thought it through. Tomorrow.
“She actually walked away,” I muttered under my breath, still
processing what had just happened. After two years of marriage, after
all we’d been through, she’d thrown her ring at me and walked off
into the night without a second glance.
I loosened my tie, suddenly feeling it was choking me. The driver kept
glancing at me through the rearview mirror, his eyes quickly darting
away whenever I caught him looking. The tension in the car was
suffocating.
My mind replayed the image of Iris standing on the side of the road,
her chin lifted defiantly, her eyes cold as ice. Gone was the woman
who once looked at me with adoration, replaced by someone who
couldn’t wait to sever all ties between us.

“Keep driving,” I instructed, rolling down the window to let the crisp
night air fill my lungs. The scent of the forest surrounded us–pine,
earth, and the faint trace of wildlife. Usually, it calmed me. Tonight, it
did nothing to ease the storm brewing inside me.
We’d reached a bend in the mountain road when the driver cleared his
throat nervously.
“Alpha,” he began, his voice hesitant as he glanced at me through the
rearview mirror, “it’s quite late, and even if we go down the mountain,
this area is mostly wilderness. She won’t be able to get a taxi.”
I stared out at the dark silhouettes of trees against the night sky. Part
of me wanted to turn around, to go back for her. But my pride
wouldn’t allow it.
“She chose to leave my protection,” I said coldly. “Let her deal with
the consequences.”
The driver’s shoulders tensed, but he nodded and continued driving. I
checked my watch–we’d already come quite a distance. Let her walk a
bit. It would serve as punishment for her stubbornness.
“Pull over here,” I finally instructed. “We’ll wait.”
The car slowed to a stop at a wider section of the road. I lowered the

window completely and reached into my jacket pocket, pulling out my
silver cigarette case. The cool metal against my fingers was familiar,
grounding.
I lit a cigarette, watching as the smoke curled and dissipated into the night air. The glowing ember illuminated my hands in the darkness-
steady hands that betrayed nothing of the turmoil inside me.
What was happening? Tonight at the Lowell estate, Iris had played her part perfectly–the devoted mate, the elegant companion. She’d stood by my side, accepting my possessive display without protest. And yet, the moment we were alone, she couldn’t wait to discuss
finalizing our separation.
I took a long drag, holding the smoke in my lungs before exhaling slowly. The nicotine did little to calm the irritation building inside me. For two years, her scent had carried notes of desire whenever I was near. Her pulse would quicken when I touched her. Her wolf had recognized mine as her Alpha, her mate.
Now, she looked at me with nothing but contempt.
A car passed by–some of the guests leaving the Lowell estate. They slowed as they recognized my vehicle, nodding respectfully as they drove past. I acknowledged them with a slight tilt of my head, maintaining the Grey family dignity even as my thoughts churned
with frustration.

Chapter 79
I finished my cigarette just as the sound of an approaching engine
caught my attention. My hearing, sharper than any human’s, picked
up the distinctive purr of a sedan making its way down the mountain
road. I straightened in my seat, eyes narrowing as the white car came
into view.
And there she was, in the passenger seat, her profile illuminated by
the dashboard lights. Iris. And beside her, driving with casual
confidence, was Noah Phillips.
My jaw clenched as I watched them. She was smiling–actually
smiling–as she talked with him. Not the forced smile she’d worn all
evening at the Lowell estate, but something genuine. Something I
hadn’t seen directed at me in months.
They were too engaged in conversation to notice my car parked on
the side of the road. I watched as they passed by, Iris’s laughter
carrying through the open window of their car. She hadn’t even
glanced in my direction, completely oblivious to my presence.
“Well, that was quick,” I thought bitterly. “Already arranged her next
move,”
The cigarette had burned down to the filter, singeing my fingers. I barely felt it, the physical discomfort nothing compared to the surge
of something primal and angry that rose within me. My wolf stirred, agitated by the sight of my mate–yes, still legally my mate–sitting

so comfortably beside another male.
The driver shifted uncomfortably, the atmosphere in the car growing heavy with my barely contained emotions.
“Alpha Grey?” he ventured cautiously.
I tossed the cigarette butt out the window. “Drive,” I commanded, my
voice low and controlled despite the storm raging inside me.
As the car pulled back onto the road, the wind rushed through the
