Just Before My Wedding: Trapped By My Ruthless Boss novel Chapter 144

Chapter 144

OCEANS.

The moment the doctor on the phone said marrow, match, emergency, and Stark authorization in the same fucking sentence, my brain stopped working.

Then my uncle took the phone from him and said the one thing I couldn’t ignore.

Your blood may be the only thing standing between Cassian and a body bag’

So I went.

I took the next available flight to Detroit, and since Saturday, the furnace of my hell had been turned higher by the simple fact that I hadn’t heard from her all weekend.

And because the universe had a filthy sense of humor, I lost my phone somewhere between the car, the private terminal, and the Detroit hospital chaos. Reaching anyone by phone became so impossible that it felt like I was in 1992.

I had to stick to emails, hospital lines, and whatever device someone shoved into my hand when another consent form needed signing.

By Sunday night, I had signed enough documents to buy the damn hospital.

Emergency donor search, private registry access, confidentiality waivers, Stark medical project clearance, transport authorization, even funding release at some point.

All because Cassian fucking Stark, the arrogant, self-destructing bastard of the family, who’d sooner drive himself off the edge of the earth than do one single thing his parents asked of him, had managed to throw the entire bloodline into bleeding chaos in a single night. A man with a blood condition the rest of us would’ve wrapped in cotton – and he takes a car and drives it like he’s daring God to finally make good on the threat.

Who does that? Who, with a body already quietly trying to kill him, gets behind the wheel and finishes the job?

No one, except Cassian.

My uncle looked ten years older by the time they took Cassian into surgery. My aunt couldn’t even cry. She just sat with her hands folded so tightly her knuckles lost color.

all that motion, all that His younger brother paced the hall like he was putting on a show of grief for a fucking audience fury thrown at the walls… But his eyes stayed a little too dry for a man whose only brother was dying on the other side of that door.

Reign.

He performed worry beautifully, but he just couldn’t make it reach his eyes.

Whatever he was selling to the doctors and his weeping mother, I wasn’t buying a share of it.

I stood there with mixed emotions, with my sleeve rolled up, waiting for blood work that eventually told us that I wasn’t the perfect match.

We had to tear open every private donor channel the hospital tried to tell us would take forty-eight hours. We made it take less. We were the ones funding the fucking hospital, and all its research over the years, after all.

Thank fuck the bastard survived in the end. Of course, I wasn’t surprised he did. Meu like Cassian don’t die when you expec en it’ll cost the most people the most pain, on a schedule only he can see.

love. God knows there isn’t much of that between Cassian and me. I went because a fortune I’d spent years bunking was tangled up and Hanging by the thread his life was hanging on — and if Cassian flatlined, every bit of it passed straight into the hands of that brother of his. I’d sooner burn it than let that happen.

Family will always be family, huh?

Even when family is a houseful of cold, distant bastards you keep at arm’s length because their whole happy, intact home reminds you of everything you’ll never get back.

one of them was Cassian Stark.

Especially then.

I put the whole rotten week behind me the second the plane touched down. None of it mattered now. Only one thing did.

“Good morning, sir.” Pratt fell into step near the elevator, his usual coffee in hand, headphones plugged into his ears as always

I pointed a finger at my own ear, the way I always did, and he understood.

“Sorry, sir.” He tugged them out and stepped into the elevator beside me.

He kept glancing at me and shifting his weight, like he had a sentence stuck behind his teeth but lacked enough spine to spit

it out
