Chapter 155
Chapter 155
KISAREL
Was this man ever going to stop
I guess not.
Now he was using Jace and Fred to manipulate me?
“Kiss.” He tried again, but I didn’t let him.
“You’re pathetic. Now you want to use them to manipulate me?” I held my forehead because the room had started to tilt again, and I hated that he was herd to witness another part of me failing. “How low can you stoop?”
“I’m not manipulating anyone.” His jaw was tight. “Kisarel, I have proof. Every page. Let me show you one document
and if you still-”
“I said get out.” I held the door open now myself, my whole arm shaking with it. “I don’t want your pages. I don’t want your proof. I don’t want you standing in my room at eleven at night telling me what I need to know about my own life.
He didn’t
move for a moment. He just looked at me, and there was something in his face I refused to let myself read, because reading it would cost me something I didn’t have left to spend.
“You’ll see it eventually,” he said quietly. “I only hope it’s not on the morning of your wedding.” He dropped the envelope on
the table.
“What are you doing?” I asked, my eyes moving from the envelope to him.
“Keep it,” he said.
“I don’t want it.”
“Then throw it away after I leave.” He said and moved toward the door.
“I might.”
He nodded slowly, as if even that hurt, and walked out.
I shut the door so hard the rickety frames rattled.
For a few seconds, I stood in the middle of the room, staring at the place where he had been.
Then my stomach turned.
I barely made it to the bathroom.
I dropped to my knees in front of the toilet and threw up until my throat burned and my eyes watered.
I sat back on the tiles and let the cold seep into my body as the nagging maths I’d been ignoring all day finally came and sat down beside me on the bathroom floor.
I’d been doing the calculations since I left the doctor’s office, and it kept coming back to the same result every single time. no matter how I rearranged the numbers or what I wished for.
The man I just threw out was the father of my
child.

thing he would never, ever let go of if he kne It was like a tether bed wraps argued me free of hire or his world or his terrible consuming love as long as I lived.
T’ll put a baby inside you before your weddin
Those were his words. And somehow, he kept them.
He could never know. That was the only clear thought I had. Whatever else happened – the wedding, Jace, all of x – Oceans Stark could never find out what I was carrying
I heard a knock on the door, and the rage came back all at once
For one wild second. I thought he had come back.
Anger gave me enough strength
I rinsed my mouth, wiped my face with the towel. hauled myself up off the tile and went to the door with my pulse hammering in my ears. I yanked the door open, ready to tear into him. “Are you insane-“The words died instantly when I saw Nessa standing outside.
She wore a dark coat, her hair tucked behind one ear, one hand wrapped around her phone.
“Oh. Nessa. I’m sorry. I…
“You left these in the cab,” she said. lifting the bag slightly. “Thought I should bring it along”
My stomach turned.
Prenatal vitamins.
The anti-nausea tablets the doctor had recommended.
I was embarrassed. “Please. Come on.”
“You look terrible.” She came in, hands already reaching for my arms. “Have you eaten anything? Have you slept at all?”
“I’m okay.” I wasn’t. “I honestly didn’t expect you’d be able to make it tonight.”
“I couldn’t sleep.” She set her bag down and turned to face me, and there was a seriousness in her that made my stomach tighten before she’d said a word. “Because I found something out today, and I’ve been going back and forth about whether to tell you. I decided you’d rather know than be protected from it. You always would.”
“What’s it about?” I asked as we sat on the bed.
“It’s about Gerald.”
My interest piqued immediately, and every sick feeling I was having got swallowed up by my curiosity.
You know I’ve been asking around quietly. For you and Elgin.” She took my hand. “I found out who was at his house the night before he died. The last people to see him.”
“What?” My heart thudded. “You have? Tell me, Nessa. Tell me. Please.”
I was desperate to know. And to also prove Elgin wrong that whatever he thought about Nessa wasn’t valid.
Her thumb moved over my knuckles as her face turned sad. “It was Oceans Stark. Your boss”

moment. I hoped I hadn’t heard her properly.
1 just stared at her as she kept talking.
“Him and his head of security The night before he died.
Reeves” She pulled out a brown envelope from her bag. “They were there. Kiss. At Gerald’s.
The floor seemed to shift under me.
She opened the envelope, and there, a photo surfaced. I was so blurry that if I hadn’t known Oceans too well, I would have doubted he was even the one in that footage.
“No.” But the word came out weak. “Why would Oceans be anywhere near Gerald? He didn’t even know Gerald. There’s no-” I stopped myself. I couldn’t keep on defending a man I didn’t know.
“I don’t know either,” Nessa said softly. “That’s what frightens me. But I have it confirmed. And I couldn’t sit on it.”
“Maybe they were there for something else.”
“I know.”
“Maybe it’s not even—”
“Kisarel.” Her voice stayed calm. “I didn’t come here to tell you what to think. I came because if I found this and hid it from you, I’d be doing what everyone else keeps doing.”
I pressed my hand to my mouth.
“And I think you should stop giving Oceans the benefit of coincidences.” She added. Her words made sense.
“Then I have to tell Elgin. Right?” I reached for my phone. “I have to tell him,” I said frantically, my hands shaking so bad I could barely hold my phone still.
Nessa’s hand closed lightly over my wrist. “Not tonight.”
