Chapter 65
Chapter 65
OCEANS.

I grabbed the first thing I saw in my closet and put it on quickly–joggers and a shirt – and crossed the room in angry strides, unlocked the door, and pulled it open before she could ring that bell a third time.
Her face lit up the moment she saw me.
She made to step inside.
I was already in the doorway before she finished that thought, pulling the door behind me just enough, blocking the entrance with my body in a way that communicated very clearly that nobody was coming in and nobody was being invited.
“What the fuck, Moon?” I kept my voice low. Not for her benefit. But for the woman on the other side of the door who I needed to stay exactly where she was. “Didn’t I ask you to wait downstairs?”
“It’s been almost two hours already,” She argued, and that’s when I realized I had been so far gone that I had lost track of time.
“What do you want?” I bit out, ignoring her.
She paused. tilted her head, and let her eyes move over me. “What were you doing in there?”
I looked at her.
The answer to that question was currently lying naked and thoroughly fucked in my bed.
“State your reason for being here,” I said, “and leave.”
She didn’t even flinch. That was the thing about Moonie she processed my coldness the way water processed a wall, just found another way around it and kept moving.
“I came to spend time with you.” She said it simply, like it was obvious. “We never spend time together, Oceans, You’re always
“It’s late. I crossed my arms. “I need to sleep.”
She stepped closer, but I stayed exactly where I was.
Her hand came up and found my chest slowly, her fingers spreading against the fabric of my shirt with a seductiveness that landed precisely nowhere, looking up at me with an expression that told me she thought this was absolutely irresistible.
Funny
“You’ve never fucked me,” she said quietly. “Not once. We’re engaged, and you’ve never even touched me.” Her fingers pressed slightly. “Not once. You’ve. Never kissed me properly. Never put your hands on me…” Her eyes dropped briefly and came back up. “I came tonight because I want you to. I want to feel you all of you however you want it. I’m here. I’m willing. And I’ve been-”

I looked at her hand on my chest.
The only woman I wanted was on the other side of that door. Naked. Spent. Still warm from everything I had done to her. Her thighs still trembling. Her voice still wrecked from trying to stay quiet. And I wasn’t even close to finished with her.
The consuming awareness of that fact was making it very dithcult to stand in this hallway and maintain the level of civility this conversation technically required.

d
This woman standing in front of me, offering herself, didn’t produce a single thing in me
Not one.
“I’ll fuck you after our wedding.” I removed her hand from my chest. “Go home”
She leaned up toward my face and tried to kiss me, but I stepped back immediately.
“Don’t.” The word came out sharp enough that she stilled. “Don’t do that again.” I looked at her directly. “Ever.”
Something moved across her face. It wasn’t embarrassment
Moonie didn’t embarrass easily. Something more like
recalibration. She straightened, smoothed her dress, and when she looked at me again, the seductiveness was gone, and something more serious had taken its place.
“Why did you fire Jorinda today?”
I said nothing.
“She’s my best friend, Oceans.” Her voice had changed register entirely
the soft, wanting quality replaced by something
with more edge. “She’s been my best friend since we were sixteen, and you fired her without even-”
“Is there a question somewhere in there?”
“Why?” She held my gaze. “Why would you do that? She didn’t do anything that warranted-
“She assaulted an employee of mine.” I bit out. “In my building. On my floor.”
My tone should have made it clear that this was not open to discussion. But this was Moon.
Her expression only shifted. Something flickered behind her eyes before she produced a small, dismissive sound that was almost a laugh.
“Assaulted.” She repeated the word like it was disproportionate. “Oceans. Whatever Kisarel told you-”
“Nobody told me anything.”
“–she is not what she presents herself to be. I know her. I grew up with her.” She shook her head slowly, like she was about to deliver difficult truths about someone she pitied. “She manipulates people. She makes them feel responsible for her. She has this way of making everyone around her feel like they need to protect her and fix things for her, and-” she paused, “—I just don’t want you to be taken in by it. By her. She’s very good at it.”
I listened to her spew all her nonsense and waited for her to finish so that I could get back inside.
“So.” She softened her voice again and stepped slightly closer. “Can you reconsider? Jorinda made a mistake. She shouldn’t
whatever she did – but she’s a good person. She needs this job. I already told her I would sort it out and-”
have
“Jorinda is not coming back to my company.” I held her gaze without blinking. “And it won’t stop there.” I let that sit for a moment. “She won’t find employment anywhere. Not in this city. Not in this industry. Not anywhere that my name carries weight, which is most places worth working.” I tilted my head slightly. “Assault of employees on company premises is not something I negotiate on. Not for anyone.”
Moonie stared at me.
“Oreans-
“My words are final.” I moved past it before she could build momentum. “While we’re here.” I looked at her directly. “Why did you take Kisarel’s clothes?”
She blinked before bursting into a genuine, slightly incredulous laughter, one that came with actual surprise. “She went

crying to you about that?” She shook her head. “Of course she did. Of course-
“She owes me.” The laughter faded, but the lightness remained. “She has always owed payment on a very long debt, Oceans. It’s really not that deep.”
hose clothes were a down
I looked at her for a long moment.
“You have until noon tomorrow,” I said, “to return every single item you took. With an apology.”
She opened her mouth.
“Those clothes were purchased against her salary advance.” I continued, without raising my voice: “She paid for them herself. And you took them from her.” I paused. “Return them.”
“Oceans, I really think you’re overreacting-”
“And if you don’t.” I held her gaze. “By two PM tomorrow, you will find that your life in this city becomes significantly more inconvenient. Shopping. Appointments. Reservations. Memberships. Another pause. “Everything. Down to whatever you try to buy online at midnight when you’re leisurely browsing the internet.” I straightened.
Irapidly
Every performance on her face had been stripped down as she blinked r
“That’s… you can’t… Oceans, those are just clothes…”
“They’re her clothes,” I said simply. “That she paid for. That you took.” I reached for the door handle behind me. “I don’t tolerate injustice against my employees. By anyone. Including you.”
I saw the color leave her face.
“You mean I should stoop that low?” She scoffed. “You can’t be serious.
“I am always serious, Moon. You know that by now.”
“But I’ve used some of them already. How on earth…”
“You have until noon to replace them.” I cut her off immediately.
“Oceans-”
“Don’t ring this bell again tonight.” I pushed the door open behind me. “I’m retiring.”
I went inside and closed the door right in her fucking face.
