Chapter 75
KISAREL.
M
I had to leave the house as early as I could today.
Elgin was still asleep when I slipped out, with his face buried in the pillow, and one arm dangling off the edge of the bed. I left a note on the kitchen counter and grabbed my bag before I could talk myself out of it.
But the truth is, my heart was running wild as I walked into Jace’s house unannounced at such an hour.
What if I found him cheating on me again?
The maid let me in with a raised eyebrow but said nothing. Tisha had stopped questioning my comings and goings a long time ago. I climbed the stairs slowly, knocked on his bedroom door, and pushed it open, and to my relief, he was alone.
He just got out of the bathroom, his shirt half buttoned, and his tie draped over his shoulder, moving through his morning like he had nowhere to be for another four hours.
He looked up when I walked in, and his whole face changed.
“Baby.” He called with genuine surprise and warmth, crossed to me immediately, and hugged and kissed me.
Truth is, I felt nothing. Not even the ghost of what I used to feel for him before.
“Arel,” he said, pulling back just enough to look at me. His thumbs traced my cheekbones. “What are you doing here this early? Not that I’m complaining-” he smiled and reached for my hand, doing all the things he did when he wanted to turn a moment into something about the two of us.
I pulled my hand out of his hold. “We need to talk.
His smile faltered just for a second. Then it was back again, a bit softer now.
“Okay.” He moved toward the dresser, picking up his watch and his cologne. “Talk. I’m listening.” He sprayed something on his neck – the expensive one he knew I liked – and turned back to me. “You want coffee? I can have Tisha bring some up.”
“What were you and Fred doing at Harrington’s office last night?”
His hands stilled on the cologne bottle just for a breath. Then he set it down and turned to face me fully.
His smile didn’t disappear. But something moved underneath it. It was fast, almost imperceptible, but it was gone before I could pin it down, and then his face was exactly as open and warm as it had been two seconds ago.
“Sorry?” He tilted his head. “How did you-” he stopped, narrowing his brows with genuine curiosity, like he was trying to place a piece of information. “You were at Harrington’s office yesterday?”
“Jace. Answer me. I folded my arms across my chest.
He looked at me for a moment, laughed, and went back to buttoning his shirt.
“Fred and I have been in talks with Harrington’s firm about a property deal” He said casually, “You know Fred has been trying to offload two of his commercial properties in Manhattan for the past year. Harrington’s firm handles commercial
it’s not exactly advertised, but if you know who to ask.” He shrugged. “We’ve had two meetings conveyancing on the side there this month already. Last night was the third”
–
I stood there, almost dumbfounded.
His story was so clean and enurely plausible that I could feel the ground of my certainty shifting under my feet.

But, no. I wasn’t buying it.
“I don’t believe you, Jace. This is about my father’s will,” I said, but my voice had lost some of its edge already, and I hated
that it had.
Jace stopped buttoning his shirt and turned to look at me fully, and the expression on his face was one of genuine hurt and
shock.
“Arel. His voice had dropped. “Do you hear yourself right now?”
To sorry. The words came out solly I shouldn’t have I didn’t mean to accuse you. I just saw you and Fred and I…

“You got scared,” he said gently, and I nodded.
He took my hands and held them against his chest. His heart was beating steadily and slowly. Nothing like mine.
I looked away.
“Arel. Baby.” He ducked his head, trying to catch my eye. “I’m not your enemy.” He kissed my forehead. “I’m the man who loves you. That’s all. That’s all I’ve ever wanted to be.”
I lifted my gaze to meet his.
“Give me a chance to prove my love for you. I am all in for you now. Moonie was a mistake. I swear,” He tucked a strand of my hair behind my ear, “I don’t know what I’ll do if I ever lose you, baby. Just…” He drew in a sharp breath, “Just come back to me. I promise to make things right.”
I nodded slowly.
“And I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you.” He drew closer, “I love
you, baby.”
