Chapter 312

BRANDON’S POV

The silence inside the grand study of the estate was thick enough to suffocate a man.

I sat behind the dark mahogany desk, the morning sun casting long; pale shadows across the open leather file/laid out before

It was Gabriel’s original military dossier, the heavily redacted personnel record from our contract days in Eastern Europe/ My fingers traced the faded black ink over his service record, stopping at the official casualty report dated six years ago the Sarajevo valley.

STATUS: DECEASED/BODY UNRECOVERED

For six years, those four words had been a lead weight tied around my throat. Every time I looked at Aria, every time I held Amelia, a dark, treacherous voice in the back of my mind had whispered that I was living on borrowed peace, that I had built my happiness on the grave of a brother I had left behind in the mud.

Now, the ghost was walking. And the guilt that had kept me awake for six years was turning into a cold, blinding terror.

The heavy oak door of the study clicked open, and Dominic stepped inside, his face pale and tight with exhaustion. He carried a secure leather tablet under his arm.

“Boss.” Dominic said quietly, shutting the door behind him. “Antonio just sent an encrypted flag from Miss Aria’s office building. Their internal network picked up a low-frequency breach attempt on Server 04 forty minutes ago.”

My head snapped up, my eyes locking onto his with lethal intensity. “Was the perimeter compromised?”

“No.” Dominic answered quickly raising a hand to calm my immediate reaction. “Miss Aria caught it herself. Whoever initiated the probe used an old Vance Group administrative key to search for sub-basement blueprints and utility shaft routes. Miss Aria patched Antonio into the logs immediately. He has already doubled the plainclothes detail on her floor.”

Julian. It had to be Julian. The coward was crawling back out of his hole, offering Gabriel the keys to Aria’s father’s building in exchange for scraps of revenge.

“Gabriel isn’t going after the company assets,” I said, my voice dropping into a dangerous, low register as I closed the leather file with a soft thud.

“He’s mapping her daily routine. He wants to draw my security detail away from the estate, split our tactical coverage across the city, and wait for us to make a mistake.”

“We can pull Miss Aria back to the estate, boss,” Dominic suggested, his hand hovering near his sidearm. “We can lock down her building completely.”

“No,” I replied, standing up slowly from the desk and pulling my wool coat over my shoulder holster. “Aria was right this morning. If we lock them in a cage, we let Gabriel dictate the terms of this war. I won’t strip away her father’s legacy to salve my own fear.”

I checked my watch. It was eleven thirty in the morning. Dismissal for the lower grades at the elite private academy was approaching in two hours.

“Where are you going, boss?” Dominic asked, falling into step behind me as I strode toward the study doors.

“Amelia’s school.” I said coldly. “I’m checking the perimeter myself.”

Ten minutes later, my two-car armored motorcade pulled out of the estate gates, heading north toward the leafy, gated district where St. Jude’s Academy sat. The sky above was overcast, a cold wind sweeping through the tall oak trees lining the

avenue.

Mren we arrived at the academy, the heavy iron gates were closed, guarded by the school’s private security staff.

I stepped out of the vehicle, my heavy coat cutting through the chill, flanked by Marcus and two tactical officers. The head of school security, a former municipal detective named Henderson, hurried out of the administrative booth to meet us.

“Mr. Sterling,” Henderson said, offering a crisp, respectful nod, though his eyes darted nervously toward Marcus’s concealed holster. “Is there a problem? We weren’t expecting an executive inspection today.

“I want a full security sweep of the outer grounds, Henderson,” I said, my unblinking gaze sweeping the high stone perimeter walls, the overt CCTV cameras, and the line of parked private vehicles across the street. “Every delivery gate, every maintenance access point, and every visitor log for the past forty-eight hours.”

“Of course, Mr. Sterling,” Henderson replied, turning to lead us along the stone pathway toward the main courtyard.

“As per your team’s instructions last month, we installed the secondary infrared sensors along the rear boundary fence. No one enters without biometric badge authentication.”

We walked along the edge of the brick building, Marcus conducting a manual frequency sweep with a hand-held scanner to check for hidden wireless transmitters or foreign relay tags.

Everything was pristine, secure, and fully operational. On paper, this school was an impenetrable fortress for children.

Yet, as we turned the corner near the main glass pavilion, my steps slowed to a complete halt.

Through the tall glass windows facing the private courtyard, I saw Amelia. She was sitting at a small wooden craft table alongside four other children, her face flushed with bright, pure joy as she dipped a paintbrush into a pot of green acrylic paint.

Clara sat on a low bench nearby, watching her with a gentle, protective smile while two discreet guards stood near the inner hallway doors.

Amelia held up her paper, showing her teacher a messy, brightly colored painting of a massive green tree with a tiny golden house underneath it.

Her sweet, ringing laughter cut through the quiet glass, completely untainted by the blood, the grief, and the cold shadows hunting her family from the dark.

My chest tightened so painfully I could barely draw air.

Six years ago, I had believed that violence and survival were the only things I was made for. I had carried the dead on my shoulders, believing I deserved nothing more than an early grave in some forgotten corner of the world.
