She nodded at his words and then turned her attention to the scenery passing by. Juniper didn’t want to admit it stung that he was hiding her relationship from the most important person in his life. It made her feel dirty and tawdry, despite his explanation.

“Hey,” he kissed her forehead, “please don’t overthink this.”

“I’m not.” She shrugged. She wasn’t overthinking it. She knew exactly what he meant. “It’s very pretty here.”

“Not as pretty as you,” Adil quipped.

“Their families are Spanish but why do you speak it so easily?” she changed the subject.

“My mother is Latina, Juniper.” He laughed. “Bennett might be my last name, but my mother’s family’s name was Suarez.”

She crinkled her nose up, “really? She doesn’t seem Latina.”

“What does she seem?” Adil was laughing now.

“Pretentious?” Beni offered.

“Snobby?” Phineas countered.

“Like British Royalty,” Juniper shrugged. “She reminded me of someone who curtseys, drinks tea with her pinky up,” she demonstrated the pose, “and crosses her legs at the ankles like Princess Kate. She’s regal.”

All three men made a face at her before erupting into laughter.

“What?”

“Only you would see her patronizing behavior as regal,” Adil leaned forward in the seat where he faced her and kissed her forehead, “you’re adorable.”

“That,” she pointed at him, “sounded patronizing.”

“He apparently told my mother he’d understand better if it was me with three girls but whatever floats my boat is good with him.”

“And your father’s parents?”

“They actually moved back here a few years ago. They invited us to dinner tomorrow night once they knew we were coming. My paternal grandmother had a brother who was gay, and he died by suicide when they were younger. She is very liberal minded, and she wants only for me to be happy. She can’t wait to meet you.”

“We’re going to meet them?”

“Yes. I can’t wait to show you off.”

Suddenly a flash of blue caught her eye, and she leaned sideways to stare incredulously at the sudden view of the sea.

Phineas leaned close and whispered in her ear, “I can’t wait to swim naked in that with you.”
