A Ride Part II
Entering Phineas‘ office, she tried to forget the last time she was here, but her eyes automatically flicked to where the monitor she’d seen Kyst’s betrayal take place was now hidden behind the wall panels.
“Hey sweetheart,” Phineas immediately got up from his desk and rounded it to walk towards her, pulling her out of Adil’s grasp and hugging her tight to him. “This is a nice surprise.”
She wound her arms around his waist and hugged him back. “Suki was exhausted and went home but I wasn’t ready to go home yet. I thought I’d pop in and say hello. Adil picked me up on the bike.”
He smoothed her hair down on her head with a teasing, grin, “it explains the helmet hair. I wish I’d seen you on the bike. I bet it was very sexy.”
She gasped as he swept her up in his arms and carried her to sit on his lap behind his desk. “Phineas!”
“As if your feet should ever touch the floor when I’m around.” He kissed her temple. He looked at Adil, “thought you had a case this morning?”
“I did. I got some very great shots of a man and his mistress in a very compromising situation. It’s enough that the wife who hired me will be able to get her divorce and confirm her prenup rules met in regard to infidelity were broken. It’s amazing to me how many people put a cheating clause in their prenups now.”
“It’s amazing to me how many men can’t keep it in their pants,” Juniper grunted.
“I’ll have you know it’s a fifty–fifty split of men and women cheaters, Juniper. Statistically speaking from my own company only, I get as many men asking me to catch their partners as I do women.”
“And your business is about catching cheaters?”
“Actually,” Adil flopped into the seat opposite Phineas‘ desk and stretched out, “I do a lot of work for the local police and OPP. I’ve done some bounty hunting. I get a lot of missing items and pets. My biggest business though is catching fraudsters for insurance companies. I think it’s my favorite job. Watching someone put a roof on their house while they’re apparently so damn painful they can’t get off the bed.”
“People do that?”
Phineas laughed, “we had one here. He filed a worker’s compensation claim for a slip down the stairs. He claimed his back was irrevocably damaged.”
“No way.”
“Yes way. Adil caught him participating in a three–day bachelor party in Vegas and part of the activities were bungy jumping and zip lining and he participated in everything. He didn’t sit a single event out and he didn’t even walk with a limp. He simply thought because he was in another country nobody would know.”
“That’s kind of cool.” She smiled at Adil. “Do you wear disguises?”
“Sometimes. I employ a large group of employees, and we all keep our own contacts and informants. For example, this morning, one of my guys was following Kyst and got some very good video of him.”
“You had someone there too?”
“Too?” Phineas asked curiously.
“She did throw his coffee all over him and struck him first.” Adil met Phineas‘ furious gaze with a shrug, “I’m not saying I would do the same but if he was a woman and not a man, and this shit happened, the woman who burned and smacked him get beaten up from another woman.” He looked at Juniper, “would you have hit her?”
“You are kidding me.”
“Nope.”
“So, he never crossed a line?” She watched Adil’s face carefully and Adil shifted. “Just say it, Adil.”
“The texts are sordid, and he’s gone so far to describe what he would do to their bodies if they were in front of him naked. It’s already a line heavily crossed but,” Adil took a breath as if knowing it was going to hurt her, “we can confirm he shared a hotel room with the woman in Montreal. What happened in the room itself, I can’t prove, but they checked in on a Friday night and checked out on a Sunday morning. There was also a woman in Ottawa he visited about eighteen months ago. She was selling her house and only wanted Kyst to manage the legal proceedings. She went to his hotel room three times over a three–day period. All three times, based on CCTV footage, she was in his room for three- and four–hour periods.”
“Was she a brunette, with green eyes and has a chin dimple.”
“How do you know?” Adil asked.
“She was Suki’s high school bully and someone I hated. We were both pissed off at him for taking her as a client. You’re telling he fucked her?”
“I can’t think of any other reason she’d show up to his hotel room and stay for three hours when as Beni pointed out, these 5/6 types of files require signatures at the in–person meeting and that’s all.”
“Can we use it? Can we use it when he forces me to go to mediation next week?” she asked Adil.
Adil nodded, “he thinks he’s covered his tracks so well but we’re going to take him down. Also, Beni is going to take the information to his father who sits on the bar association’s panel. He wants to take both Kyst and his boss, down, and hard.”
