Kiss Me Captain (Emily and Maddie) novel Chapter 49

[Maddie’s POV]

Two weeks post-surgery and I’m learning that recovery is less about healing and more about accepting humiliation in increasingly creative forms. Today’s highlight: Emily helping me wash my hair in the sink because I can’t balance on crutches and lean over the shower simultaneously without recreating my accident.

“Stop moving,” Emily says, fingers working shampoo through my hair with surprising gentleness. “You’re going to fall.”

“I’m not going to fall. I have excellent balance.” The crutch propped against my hip immediately slides sideways. Emily catches it before it hits the floor, her hand steadying my elbow with practiced ease.

“Right. Excellent balance. That’s why you nearly face-planted into the bathroom mirror this morning reaching for your toothbrush.”

“That was different. I was half asleep.” I close my eyes as she rinses the shampoo, warm water cascading over my scalp. The gentleness of her touch makes my chest tight. “You don’t have to do this, you know. I could just wear a hat for the rest of my life.”

“Very sexy. I’m sure the judges at Nationals would love that.” Her voice is light but there’s something underneath it—careful distance masquerading as normalcy. She’s been like this for two weeks. Present but not really there, helpful but guarded, like she’s wrapped herself in invisible bubble wrap and I can’t figure out why.

The physical therapy sessions are brutal. Emily drives me three times a week, sits in the waiting room during the appointments, helps me home afterward when my ankle is screaming and I’m too exhausted to pretend I’m fine.

She reaches things from high shelves without being asked, carries my meal tray when the dining hall’s too crowded for crutches, reorganizes our dorm so everything I need is within hobbling distance. She does all of it with quiet efficiency that makes my chest ache.

I’m grateful. I’m also slowly losing my mind. The dependency is suffocating—needing help with everything, unable to do basic tasks alone, aware of how much Emily’s sacrificing to take care of me.

“You’re thinking too loud,” Emily says one evening while I’m icing my ankle and pretending to study. She’s at her desk, laptop open, but I can feel her attention on me like weight.

“I’m not thinking about anything.” The lie tastes bitter. I’m thinking about the hospital, about waking up in recovery with the vague sense that something important happened.

Emily’s face hovers at the edge of memory—serious, maybe worried, definitely saying something I can’t quite grasp. The memory fragments slip away every time I reach for them. “Right. That’s why you’ve been staring at the same page for twenty minutes.”

“Maybe I’m really absorbed in organic chemistry mechanisms.” My phone buzzes, saving me from whatever response she’s preparing. Unknown number. I answer anyway, desperate for distraction. “Hello?”

“Is this Madison Reyes?” The voice is professional, official. My stomach drops.

“Yes. Who’s this?”

“Officer Carson from campus security. I’m calling regarding the no-contact order filed against Derek Owens.” Emily’s head snaps up from her laptop. I put the call on speaker with shaking hands. “We wanted to inform you that Mr. Owens has been formally expelled from the university for violating the order multiple times.”

Relief floods through me, followed immediately by unease. “Okay. Thank you for letting me know.”

“There’s something else.” Officer Carson’s tone shifts, becomes heavier. “During his disciplinary hearing, it came to light that Mr. Matthews has been spreading rumors about you and Miss Foster.”

He pauses, looking for words. “Claiming you’re in a relationship together. We want you to know these claims are being treated as harassment and retaliation, not investigated. However, the rumors have spread fairly widely on campus.”

The room tilts. Emily’s face goes pale. I force my voice to stay steady, normal, unbothered. “I understand. Thank you for the information.”
