Harvey found himself being pulled by Eowyn, slinking like a thief for the first time in his life toward the motel across the street.
Harvey frowned at her, “What the hell are you doing?”
He always strutted through Ranard City with impunity, and he never had to slink around like this.
“Keep your voice down! Don’t draw attention to us!” Eowyn warned.
Harvey rolled his eyes. ‘Does she really think this isn’t already drawing attention?‘
Luckily, Eowyn’s next words immediately captured his full attention.
“I just saw Jasmine go into that motel with some guy. It looked pretty suspicious. Let’s go check it out!” Eowyn said.
Eowyn’s female intuition was going wild. She was sure something fishy was happening between Jasmine and that guy.
“Jasmine?” Harvey narrowed his eyes, his dislike for her obvious. If he could dig up any more dirt on her, he’d absolutely love to see her go down for it.
So the two of them were totally on the same page and headed straight for the motel together.
Not far away, a car was waiting at a red light when the guy in the passenger seat suddenly piped up, “Hey, Leon, isn’t that your troublemaker nephew walking with some woman? Did he seriously score himself a new girlfriend?”
Leon, lounging in the back seat, glanced out the window. The next moment, his gaze sharpened and locked onto the woman with his nephew.
Even from behind, Leon could recognize it was Eowyn.
“Wait a minute, why are they heading into a motel? If your nephew’s gonna hook up with a girl, shouldn’t he be hitting up a five–star hotel at least?” the guy in the front said, sounding genuinely shocked.
“Turn around. Pull over,” Leon suddenly ordered in an icy tone.
“Huh?” The guy up front looked confused. “Seriously, Leon? Your nephew just picked up a girl. No need for that uncle emergency mode.”
Leon’s gaze was frosty. “Did you not hear what I said?”
The person in front glanced at Leon in the rearview mirror, whose handsome face was now clouded with gloom, as if he had just lost a crucial lawsuit.
Actually, in all his years dominating the legal world, Leon was unbeaten. He’d never dropped a single case.
As Leon’s longtime buddy, Clint Laramie had only ever seen him look that wrecked once, and that was when he got dumped over the phone by his ex–girlfriend. At that time, his expression turned instantly dark and ominous, and afterward, he even….
Remembering that time was enough to give Clint the chills. ‘Who would’ve guessed that a guy as buttoned–up and polished as Leon could totally snap like that? It was honestly freaky, Clint thought to himself.
The driver pulled up at the curb, and Leon got out, making a beeline for the motel. Clint hurried after him, whispering. “Dude, you’re not seriously about to drag your own nephew outta there, are you?
“The guy’s an adult! But that woman who went in with him… Man, she looks so familiar. It’s nagging at me, like I’ve seen her before… Wait a second, isn’t she that ex–girlfriend you had back then…”
Clint’s words died on his lips.
Leon was practically exuding an aura of icy menace.
Clint gasped in disbelief. ‘No way… Could it really be Leon’s ex–girlfriend? Back when Leon was seeing that girl, everyone assumed it wouldn’t be long before he’d break up with her.
‘After all, Leon, heir to a legal dynasty and owner of Ranard City’s largest law firm, was hardly a match for a woman with such limited worldly experience.
‘But to everyone’s shock, it was actually his girlfriend who ended things first. And after that breakup, Leon never got involved with another woman.’
People in their social circle who knew about them would gossip quietly, wondering if Leon hadn’t gotten over that old flame.
But all these years, Leon never so much as mentioned that ex–girlfriend. Even when people said her name, he’d shrug it off like he couldn’t care less. It made Clint think that the whole thing was just ancient history to Leon, no big deal at all.
But now, watching his reaction, Clint realized it was definitely a big deal.
At that moment, Jasmine stepped into the dingy motel room with Paul Jerome.
Disgust flashed in her eyes. ‘If Nicolas hadn’t sent this guy to investigate that old drowning incident, I wouldn’t be stuck with him holding something over me, let alone hustling into some crappy motel just to keep things quiet,‘ Jasmine thought.
“What do you want to talk about?” she snapped, clearly irritated.
“Of course, we’re here to talk about the final payment,” Paul said, a sly smirk twisting his lips. “You promised you’d pay me after you and Nicolas got together, but come on, your reputation’s ruined.
“Who knows if you’ll even get that happy ending? Honestly, it’d be best for you to hand over the cash now, before things get messier.”
“What?” Jasmine blurted out, her mind spinning. ‘Final payment? He really expects me to cough up 14.85 million dollars, just like that? Where the hell am I supposed to pull that much money overnight?‘
Besides, she was only stringing him along at that time and never actually intended to give him the money.
Once Nicolas married her, whether she was his lifesaver or not wouldn’t matter anymore! Even if Paul told Nicolas the truth, she was confident she could keep him in the marriage.
But the real issue was… She and Nicolas weren’t married yet. ‘I absolutely cannot let Nicolas find out about this, Jasmine decided.
“I’m not Mrs. Mayer yet. Where would I get all that money?” Jasmine replied, trying to keep her nerves from showing.
“But you’re still a member of the Ingram family. If you really want money, you’ll find a way,” Paul said with a smirk. “I’m giving you a month.
“If you don’t settle up, I’ll go straight to Nicolas and tell him that you’re not the one who saved his life, and that you played him for a fool. After that, you can forget about ever becoming Mrs. Mayer.”
Jasmine bit her lip so hard that it almost drew blood. Paul was right. The Mayer family already didn’t want her with Nicolas, and if Nicolas found out she’d been lying about saving his life, he’d toss her into the cold immediately.
‘No… I can’t let things fall apart now, Jasmine thought to herself. ‘For now, I have no choice but to keep Paul under control and figure out a solution later.
“Alright, I’ll do it. But this is between you and me alone. No third party must ever know,” Jasmine said.
“Sure,” Paul said with a satisfied grin.
Meanwhile, in the room next door, Eowy pressed her ear against the wall, then pressed a glass against it with her ear against the cup’s base, trying to amplify the sound and eavesdrop. But after straining for what felt like hours, she heard nothing at all.
‘Since when do these rundown motels have such good soundproofing?‘ Eowyn groused inwardly.
“So you dragged me here just to make it look like we’re shacking up?” Harvey muttered, sounding downright irritated.
“I’m just trying to eavesdrop on whatever they’re up to,” Eowyn retorted. She’d even paid off the front desk clerk to figure out which room Jasmine and Paul went into.
Harvey shot her a look of pure disdain. “You could listen all night and still get nowhere. If you ask me, we should kick down the door and see what Jasmine is really up to!”
“That would totally tip them off!” Eowyn hissed.
Just then, someone knocked on the door. Harvey shot Eowyn a look, and she shrugged. “I’ll get it,” she said.
Just as she reached the door and carefully cracked it open, there before her stood the one face she least expected to see. It was Leon!
