Chapter 166
Wren said with a firm look in his eyes, “Why do you think I will be unable to turn her down? Zozo, I’m no longer a kid. I know exactly the difference between gratitude and love.
“I’m thankful to her, because honestly, everyone around me has always wanted something from me. My dad tried to use me to control my mom, and my grandpa just wanted me to be the perfect heir to the Richmond family.
“But that girl didn’t want anything from me at all. She saved me just because she wanted to help.”
Wren glanced at Zoya and added, “After meeting you, my gratitude toward her became even stronger. If it weren’t for her, I probably would’ve died right then and there.
“I never would’ve gotten the chance to meet you, or even realized how deep feelings for someone could run.”
“But…” Wren hesitated, then spelled out every word slowly, underscoring his resolve, “Apart from gratitude, I won’t have any other feelings for her, even though she saved my life.
“If you’re worried about it, I swear that if I ever track her down, I won’t go to see her. My staff will handle it, and I’ll make sure she’s properly compensated.”
Zoya locked eyes with Wren. The intensity in his gaze and the firmness in his voice showed that he genuinely meant every single word.
“Let’s go see her together if we ever find her,” Zoya suggested.
Wren blinked in surprise, obviously not expecting Zoya to say that.
“I want to thank her as well. If she hadn’t saved you, I wouldn’t have ever met you,” Zoya added.
“You really don’t mind?” Wren said softly.
Zoya replied, “I’m not blind to what’s right and wrong. Seriously, you haven’t done anything wrong. Wanting to find the person who saved your life and thank her is totally normal. I’m not gonna worry about stuff that hasn’t even happened yet. But…”
She took a deep breath and said, “If one day you really move on and fall for someone else, I won’t hold onto this relationship. I’ll choose to leave.”
Maybe because the lesson she learned from Nicolas had been carved so deeply into her heart, when Zoya realized Wren had been searching for his lifesaver, she couldn’t help but feel a jolt of unease.
But she felt that Wren was different. He wasn’t Nicolas.
Nicolas had used “repaying his savior” and “just friends” as excuses to betray his marriage, trying to have it both ways, which honestly just made her sick to her stomach.
So when Daphne mentioned it, Zoya suddenly found herself flooded with anxiety and nerves.
She was scared she might end up hurt the same way again.
“Zozo, you’re the only one I’ve ever wanted. No one else could ever make my heart race but you, no matter when,” Wren declared as he reached out and took her hand.
Only when he felt her warmth in his palm again did that lonely, empty feeling inside him finally melt away.
He brought her hand up, pressing her palm firmly against his cheek as if he couldn’t bear to let go.
He’d been searching for this feeling of warmth from her all this time.
When Wren first started to feel something special for Zoya, every time he looked at her, memories of that little girl who rescued him as a child would flash through his mind.
Both Zoya and that girl carried a radiance that seemed almost unreal.
Since he was trapped in the shadows, he craved that kind of warmth.
But as a kid, that light left him more curious than anything. He just felt lost and couldn’t quite figure it out.
He couldn’t wrap his head around why that girl would go to such lengths for a stranger like him. She never asked for anything in return or tried to use him. She helped him purely out of kindness, with no strings attached.
But now, after Wren met Zoya, that same radiance made him downright possessive. He couldn’t help wanting her all to himself.
He was so obsessed with keeping her close that the thought of ever letting her go was simply unbearable.
Even when her glow left him feeling insecure and anxious, he’d still trust her with all his joy, sorrow, and even his very life, just so he wouldn’t have to lose her.
These feelings burned so fiercely. They were overwhelming and unfamiliar, yet somehow, they felt inevitable, like he’d been waiting for them all his life.
People always said the Richmond family was absolute lunatics. They were possessive and scary where feelings were concerned.
At that moment, Wren realized that he was indeed a member of the Richmond family since he was acting that way.
Wren murmured as he stared intensely at her, “So, Zozo, everything you said about me ever falling for someone else just not gonna happen.
“You can’t just leave me hanging either. That girl has saved my life, but you’ve rescued me more than once.
“I told you before. If you’re gonna save me, you can’t bail halfway, I need you to stick with me. Don’t ever dump me back into that darkness, that place where even living felt pointless.”
And with those words, Wren crashed his lips against Zoya’s, sealing his feelings in a deep, reckless kiss, like he wanted to pour every bit of his love into this kiss.
Nicolas woke up the next morning with a splitting headache.
Nicolas thought, ‘What even happened last night? I literally can’t remember a thing.’
“Nicolas!” Jasmine said as she walked over to his bed, “You’re finally awake. You got totally wasted last night. It took me forever to get you into bed.”
“Really?” Nicolas mumbled, shaking his head. He only remembered having a few drinks, but after that, everything was just a blur.
“Since when did you get so lightweight? I remember you used to be able to hold your liquor way better than this,” Jasmine teased.
“Maybe I was just too happy yesterday, so I let my guard down,” Nicolas replied.
“By the way, are you free today? I was hoping you could come with me to the hospital,” Jasmine said.
“What’s wrong? Are you not feeling well?” Nicolas asked, concern written all over his face.
Jasmine smiled. “It’s just a quick check–up.”
When Nicolas accompanied Jasmine to the hospital, she went straight to the gynecology department to register. When her number was called, she gave Nicolas a gentle smile. “I’m heading in. Wait for me here, okay?”
“Alright,” Nicolas replied, though he found it a little odd.
Nicolas thought, ‘People usually come to the hospital when they’re sick or in pain, so why is she smiling like that?
‘Maybe I’m just overthinking it.‘
Soon, Jasmine came out of the exam room and headed off for a blood test.
Meanwhile, Zoya was still at her computer, carefully enhancing the video footage. With each tweak, the image on the screen sharpened bit by bit.
Eventually, a figure took shape. It was unmistakably a woman’s figure.
But because of the darkness, Zoya could only make out the contours of the woman’s face, her actual features still swallowed by shadow.
Still, even this much was enough for Zoya.
The woman struck a pose to light her cigarette. There was a brief flash as her lighter sparked, then darkness swallowed the flame once more.
Zoya’s eyes narrowed in a jolt, fixing firmly on the magnified figure on her screen.
‘It’s Jasmine!‘ Zoya thought.
Even if her features were hidden by shadows, those familiar outlines were enough for her to determine that the woman smoking in the video was Jasmine.
