Zoya returned to the house and found Nicolas sitting on the living room couch. “Zoya, do you really want a divorce that badly?” Nicolas asked.

“There’s no point in keeping our marriage going,” Zoya said.

You want a divorce over some trivial things? What do you take marriage for?” Nicolas sounded annoyed.

Trivial” Zoya looked at him mockingly. “What Anica and Violette did to me is trivial? Your affair with Jasmine is trivial?”

“Anica and Violette were wrong to treat you that way, but they’re in custody now. They’ve paid the price. Isn’t that enough?” Nicolas retorted.

Zoya found it laughable. ‘Does the victim have to be satisfied just because the perpetrator paid a price?‘ she thought.

“Besides, Jasmine and I are just friends. I’ve never slept with her, so stop saying I cheated on you with her,” he snapped.

Do you think only physical cheating counts as cheating?” Zoya shot back.

When everyone thought you two were a couple, when they called you the perfect pair–did you ever refute it? Did you ever say you were already married?” she questioned.

“Those were business settings. I couldn’t ruin the mood. And if I’d refuted it outright, I would’ve embarrassed Jasmine,” Nicolas said.

You weren’t afraid of ruining the mood or embarrassing Jasmine. You just thought having a wife like me was shameful–you couldn’t bring yourself to say it.” Zoya cut to the truth.

Nicolas’s face flushed, then he said, “What about you? Do you think you’re flawless? You have multiple patents. You were even a drone expert in the military, but you never told me.”

“Yes, I didn’t specifically mention it because you were never interested in my past,” Zoya said. “I did tell you I’d done research on drones once.

“But what did you say? You thought I was bragging, that I was jealous of Jasmine and trying to compete with her.”

Nicolas fell silent, remembering that when the company was venturing into drones, Zoya had indeed mentioned it. But he hadn’t believed her.

“Nicolas, the one who looks down on me the most in this family is you. That’s why your mother, your friends, even Jasmine -they all look down on me too,” Zoya said coldly.

Nicolas’s face flushed and then paled. After a while, he mumbled, “I don’t look down on you. I j–just…” He wanted to defend himself but didn’t know where to start.

“None of it matters anymore. I’m here only to discuss the divorce,” Zoya said.

Nicolas pressed his lips together. “Are you divorcing me to be with Harvey?”

“What?” Zoya froze. She had no idea why Nicholas had mentioned Harvey too.

“I never thought you were that close to Harvey, First Wren, now Harvey. Zoya, you sure know how to attract men,” he said, jealousy clear in his voice.

Zoya frowned. “Nicolas, you’re the sleazy one–don’t go assuming everyone’s as sleazy as you are. Harvey’s my partner in

arms.

“Partner in arms?” Nicolas scoffed. “A partner would stick up for you, even after you’ve been out of the military for three years?

Nicolas, soldiers don’t deserve that kind of insult. Between soldiers, it’s a life–or–death bond. We trust each othe lives, risking everything to save each other in danger.”

But things were different. “What if I refuse?” Zoya asked.

Nicolas said, “Then I’ll sue you. I know you want to give this to your friend’s Bluesky Technology. But it’s marital property. Go ahead–if you don’t care about getting your friend in trouble.”

Zoya’s eyes filled with disappointment. “I thought there was at least a shred of decency in you. But now, you’re even stooping to such low tactics.”

“I’m doing this for the company. If you insist on divorce, that drone patent has to go to Mayer Technology,” Nicolas said firmly.

Mayer Technology was in trouble. With this patent, many problems would solve themselves.

Zoya snorted, “For the company? Fine. Hold a press conference, announce the divorce publicly, and go to City Hall with me to finalize it–and I’ll give you the patent.”

Nicolas didn’t expect her to agree so easily. “You mean it?”

“Yeah, I mean it,” Zoya said.

“Good. I’ll hold the press conference in three days,” Nicolas said, staring at her intensely. “I hope you keep your word.”

Zoya suddenly laughed. Nicolas was someone she had once loved. Despite the repeated disappointments, she had invested feelings in him.

And now, even the divorce was something Nicolas could use to threaten her, to demand benefits.

“Nicolas, I’ve never regretted anything in my life. But right now, I really regret marrying you,” she said.
