Chapter 97
Nicolas was absently talking with government officials and some wealthy local businessmen from Marabotara in the hall.
But images of Zoya rushing into the sea to save the child kept flashing in his mind.
She was so decisive and resolute, without a hint of hesitation.
‘How many people possess such courage?’ Nicolas thought.
He thought, ‘Although I wanted to rush over after seeing the child fall into the sea, if I really did, would I jump into the sea to save the child, or would I stop short?’
When he asked himself, he found the latter was more likely.
He couldn’t help but wonder if Zoya was truly lying.
With her swimming skills and such courage, if she had actually seen him in the river, she would indeed have rushed in to save him.
But if Zoya wasn’t lying, then Jasmine was the one lying.
Thinking of this, his hand holding the wine glass trembled involuntarily, and the wine in the glass almost spilled.
“Nicolas?” Jasmine said from the side. “What’s wrong? You don’t look so good.”
“No, nothing,” he said, his gaze falling on Jasmine’s face.
Ever since he met Jasmine, she had always been a straightforward and generous woman. Such a woman wouldn’t deceive him.
Moreover, as she once said, back then, he was a poor boy with nothing. There was no benefit she could gain by deceiving him.
Just then, a sudden commotion arose at the entrance of the hall.
Nicolas and Jasmine looked over, only to see Wren and Zoya walking in side-by-side.
Wren, dressed in a black suit, looked elegant and distinguished. Beside him, Zoya, though wearing only a simple suit, appeared exceptionally sharp.
Seeing that her face was no longer pale from having just rescued someone, Nicolas couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief.
“Mr. Richmond, Mrs. Mayer, thank you for your heroic rescue today. Otherwise, there would have been fatalities on the island today,” said Davon Sherman, who was in charge of island development in Marabotara.
Wren said calmly, “The person who deserves thanks is Zoya. She was the one who went to rescue them; I merely helped.”
“But after I saw him save the child, Mr. Richmond also embraced Mrs. Mayer. I wonder what your relationship is…” Davon asked curiously.
“She is a very important person to me. I was just too worried about her then,” Wren said.
Davon couldn’t help but glance at Zoya a few more times. After all, for someone Wren described as “very important,” it meant Zoya was indeed significant.
Not far away, Laurence was conversing with some wealthy individuals from Marabotara.
Watching Wren and Zoya stand side by side, the wealthy individuals said enviously, “Laurence, isn’t that girl from Abbott’s branch of the Lucero family?”
“Yes, she is Zoya from Abbott’s branch,” Laurence said.
“The Lucero family has such good luck. You had Daphne before, and now you have Zoya,” someone said, with an undeniable hint of envy.
After all, if the Richmond family protects them, the Lucero family will only grow stronger.
Among the wealthy families in Marabotara, everyone wanted to forge ties with the Richmond family.
Yet, it was precisely the two girls from the Lucero family who succeeded.
Laurence smiled, but a flicker of worry flashed in his eyes.
Daphne, standing nearby, gritted her teeth resentfully. These people described her with “before,” as if she were a thing of the
past.
Just then, she saw someone walk up to Zoya, seem to say a few words, and then Zoya left Wren’s side.
This was a good chance.
Seeing this, Daphne immediately walked up to Wren. “Wren, can we talk privately?”
Wren glanced at her indifferently. “Is there anything we need to discuss privately?”
“I know I said the wrong thing at the villa last time and upset you,” Daphne said. “I didn’t mean any harm by those words. I just wanted to express that our relationship has been good since childhood. I just wanted to tell Zoya how much… how much I care about you.”
“Care about me? If you truly cared about me, you wouldn’t have run away in fear back then,” he scoffed.
Daphne’s expression suddenly changed. That was the most regrettable thing she had ever done.
Back then, she accidentally entered that forbidden room, but upon seeing whips covering the walls, Wren’s back covered in blood, and Wren’s mother lying on the ground, she was terrified and fled.
If she hadn’t fled then, but had voluntarily stayed to accompany Wren, would he have opened up to her sooner?
“Well… at that time, I was still young. I… I just suddenly saw those things and was too scared, that’s why I acted that way. Any child would be scared.” Daphne made excuses.
Besides, she paid a price; her lost eye was the cost.
“Yes, you were too young and too scared, so you fled. I never blamed you; after all, you had no obligation to stay for me,” Wren said nonchalantly.
“Wren, I know you still blame me. I will make amends. I promise that no matter what happens in the future, I will never leave you and run away,” Daphne said anxiously.
“I told you. I don’t blame you, so you don’t need to make any amends. But this doesn’t mean you can casually discuss my Richmond family’s private matters. You didn’t die this time; you should properly thank Zoya,” said Wren.
Daphne was so furious she almost bit through her teeth. She absolutely hated Zoya; why would she be grateful?
Wren, however, couldn’t be bothered with Daphne and looked in the direction Zoya had just left.
After understanding his feelings, he seemed to become even more restless.
She had only been gone for a short while, and he was already eager to see her.
Zoya, accompanied by the orphanage director, went to the hotel’s infirmary.
The child, who had fallen into the water, was lying on the hospital bed, his face still full of unease. However, upon seeing Zoya, he struggled to get up and rushed into her arms.
“I’m so sorry,” the director said apologetically. “This child has been very anxious ever since being rescued and kept asking to see you.”
“It’s alright,” Zoya said softly, gently hugging the child in her arms. “What’s wrong? You’re safe now; there’s no need to be afraid anymore.”
“I’m still scared… so scared.” the child sobbed.
Clearly, this drowning incident left a deep psychological trauma on the child.
“Don’t be afraid. I’m here. If you’re in danger, I’ll save you,” Zoya said.
“Really?” The child looked up, his face still showing the fear of having narrowly escaped death.
“Yes, really. I’ll save you. I’ll definitely save you,” Zoya said.
A firm and powerful voice soothed the child’s uneasiness, making Nicolas, who had just arrived at the doorway, pause abruptly.
The words Zoya was saying now were so similar to what he had heard when he was semi-conscious in the river back then.
‘Why… would Zoya say these words?’ he thought. ‘And why was her figure repeatedly overlapping with the figure I vaguely saw when I was semi-conscious in the past?”
‘Who exactly saved me back then?’ he wondered.
