Back at the eastern villa, Sapphira and Larissa settled onto the sofa.
“Seeing the look on Vivica’s face tonight was so satisfying,” Sapphira vented. “Does she really think you’re some object she can discard and pick up whenever she pleases?”
Larissa leaned against her new mother, soaking in her warmth. “She only sees my value now that I’ve outshone Honora. Besides, I already have the most beautiful, gentle mother in the world. Why would I ever go back to her? She’s dreaming.”
Sapphira sighed. “From the way she was acting tonight, I have a feeling she’s going to try and drive a wedge between us.”
Larissa sat up and made a fist. “You and Dad are the only parents I want. If anyone tries to come between us, I’ll punch them.”
Sapphira couldn’t help but laugh. “That’s right! If anyone tries to cause trouble, I’ll have your father punch them.”
Neville, sitting nearby, nodded gravely and raised his own fist. “Just the thought of someone bad-mouthing my daughter makes my knuckles itch.”
Seeing the usually gentle Neville act so fierce made both Larissa and Sapphira burst out laughing.
Larissa leaned back against her mother, her voice soft but firm. “Mom, you and Dad don’t have to worry. As long as you don’t abandon me, I will never leave you.”
A lump formed in Sapphira’s throat. She patted Larissa’s arm gently. “Every night before bed, I take out the official documents just to see your name legally registered with Neville’s and mine. It’s the only way it feels real. You are a precious gift from heaven. Your father and I never dreamed we would have a daughter. How could we ever let you go?”
Neville chuckled. “I was just teasing your mother about how she’s started taking the documents to bed. After all these years, I never thought I’d have to compete with documents for her affection.”
Sapphira turned and poked him playfully. “When did you become such a flirt?”
Neville took her hand again, his expression serious. “I was wrong, but I have no intention of changing.”
Larissa giggled. “I’m not laughing at you.” She winked playfully. “I’m going upstairs to chat with my fiancé. We have to cultivate our relationship, you know!”
Neville waved her off. “Go on, then.”
“You got it!” Larissa bounded up the stairs.
Sapphira watched her go, a new worry creeping into her mind. “Larissa is far more exceptional than we ever imagined. She could have had so many other options for marriage. Are we sure supporting her decision to marry Haskell was the right thing to do?”
