Zoltan, who had been silent until now, finally spoke up. "You have the nerve to talk about insults? Have you forgotten that the lavish lifestyle you've enjoyed for years, spending money like water, was built entirely on Haskell’s hard work in the business world?"
A lump of indignation formed in Thatch's throat, leaving him speechless. It was the truth, but hearing it said aloud was unbearably grating.
"That's all I have to say, Dad," Haskell announced, rising. "I'll be heading to my room to rest now. As you said, I need to focus on healing my leg." He then nodded toward Zoltan. "Grandpa, I won't see you out."
Zoltan waved a dismissive hand. "Go on."
The moment his grandson was out of sight, Zoltan's face hardened as he turned his piercing gaze on his youngest son.
"Tell me," he demanded. "Is Valeria really your illegitimate daughter?"
"Dad, how can you listen to Haskell's nonsense..." Thatch immediately denied.
Zoltan’s face was grim. "It had better be nonsense," he sneered. "If she is, Haskell will never let you off the hook. If you weren't my son, useless as you are, I wouldn't even bother to warn you."
With a final, furious snort, he turned and stormed away.
Thatch stared at his father’s retreating back, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white.
“Fine. They all look down on me. One day, I will pay back every bit of this humiliation a hundred times over.”
...
Back in his room, Haskell immediately took out his phone. When he saw a new message from Larissa, the coldness in his eyes melted into a sea of tenderness. He smiled softly at the simple greeting on the screen and typed his reply.
[Yeah, I’m home. Just finished dealing with some annoying family drama. A little tired, and a little sad. I could use some comfort from my future wife.]
Larissa chuckled at his message and sent a flurry of kissing emojis in response.
Another message quickly appeared:
[I want a real one.]
She hadn’t expected him to be so forward.
Larissa: [Haskell, you’re not subtle at all!]
Haskell: [Rest well. See you tomorrow.]
Larissa: [See you tomorrow.]
As Larissa looked up from her phone, she was met by three pairs of vertical pupils, all staring at her with what seemed to be a scrutinizing gaze.
"What are you three up to?" she asked.
The three little snakes looked at one another. Then, Sage and Snowy used their tails to form the shape of a heart.
Larissa was speechless.
Were they suggesting… mating?
She sat up straight, hands on her hips. "Alright, so the three of you have learned to poke fun at me now, have you?"
Sage immediately slithered away. Snowy and Shadow were right behind it.
