After a moment, Larissa tilted her head back, meeting Paxton’s dark gaze, and enunciated each word with chilling clarity. “That’s right. It’s all true. I will destroy your family, and I won’t stop until I’m finished.”
Hearing those words from his own daughter, a vein throbbed on Paxton Judson’s forehead. He’d heard it secondhand from his wife, but it hadn’t truly hit him. Hearing it directly from Larissa was a different kind of wound—deep and devastating. He was a man who had lived for half a century; he would not be threatened by some ignorant child, especially not one who was his own flesh and blood.
Sensing the icy rage emanating from Paxton, Wren grew anxious for Larissa’s safety. She quickly pulled out her phone and stepped aside to call Neville, hoping to warn him that Paxton was causing trouble and get him home to protect his daughter. But the line just rang and rang, unanswered, and Wren’s panic mounted with every passing second.
Paxton pointed a trembling finger at Larissa, his voice a low sneer. “Good. Very good. You truly are my dear daughter.”
“Let me correct you again, Uncle Paxton,” Larissa said, her tone unwavering. “I’m not your daughter. I don’t have a cold-hearted monster for a father.”
Paxton dropped his hand and clasped it behind his back, his face a frozen mask. “Fine! So I’m cold-hearted for not acknowledging you sooner. But look at yourself now! What does this make you? Some kind of righteous hero turning on her own family? Your mother and I regret what we did. We want to bring you home, to make it up to you, but have you given us a chance?”
Larissa let out a cold laugh. “People who could abandon their own child to suffer have no right to a second chance.”
Seeing that his words were having no effect, Paxton gave up trying to reason with her. He stared at her, his eyes hard. “I’ll ask you one last time. Are you truly never going to forgive us?”
Her gaze was merciless. “And I’ll say it one last time. Ab-so-lute-ly not.”
Paxton scoffed. “Fine. If that’s how you want it, don’t blame me for forgetting we’re related. You’ll have to answer for what you did to Vivica this morning!”
“Wren!” Larissa cried out, shocked that the housekeeper cared so much for her well-being. She was even more shocked that Paxton would be so ruthless as to attack an elderly woman.
Larissa rushed to Wren’s side and helped her up, quickly checking her pulse. Relieved to find no serious injury, she drew two slender, silver needles from a pouch she carried and inserted them into two pressure points on Wren’s arm to calm her.
“Miss Larissa, I couldn’t reach Mr. Neville…” Wren rasped.
“Don’t talk, Wren. Don’t worry, they can’t hurt me. And he will answer for hurting you.” With that, Larissa helped Wren to her feet and slowly walked her toward Paxton.
