Larissa closed her medical book with a snap.

“Finley, you’re just as arrogant as the day we first met,” she said, her voice laced with contempt. “If your little schemes had succeeded, if I hadn’t fought back, would any of you have stopped to reconsider your actions? This speech isn’t about remorse. You’re not sorry for what you did. You’re just scared because you failed. You’ve finally realized that the person you thought you could crush might just be the one to bring you to your knees.”

Her words struck him silent. He had no rebuttal.

“Since your family decided to be ruthless with me, you should have the decency to stick with it,” Larissa said, standing up. “Don’t come to me with this pathetic, wavering act of mercy. I don’t need it.”

She turned and walked away from the half-tilled garden, her back straight and unyielding.

Watching her go, Finley’s expression hardened. He had given her a chance. If his sister was determined to be stubborn, then she couldn’t blame them for what came next.

His phone rang, pulling him from his thoughts.

It was Honora.

“Finley, you should probably head back soon. It’s almost time to leave for the meeting with Field of Lari.”

“Right. I’m on my way.”

“A compliment for Honora is a compliment for me!” he declared. “Which is why you and Dad need to stop thinking about making up with Larissa just because she’s a little better at the piano. Think how much that hurts Honora.”

At the mention of this, Honora’s lip trembled and her eyes grew misty. “Actually, I…”

“You don’t have to say you don’t mind, Honora,” Leopold cut in. “Of course you mind. You’ve been with us for twenty years.”

Honora forced a sad smile. “Of course I’m hurt, Leopold. But the last thing I want is to make things difficult for you and your parents. No matter what, Larissa is their biological daughter, and your biological sister.”

“Honora, dear, wanting to reconnect with that girl was a mistake,” Vivica said quickly. “We weren’t thinking of your feelings. But you have to believe us, in our hearts, you are our real daughter. The only reason we wanted to bring her back was so Neville and Sapphira wouldn't get the upper hand.”
