At that, Larissa deliberately stepped on one of the bags. “You’re right. Are these clothes special? I usually can’t be bothered to wear things like this.”
Her mind was always on her work. Clothes were just decorations, worn when necessary and forgotten otherwise. Who treated brand names like sacred texts? It was laughable.
Larissa started to head downstairs.
Just then, Honora leaned in and whispered, her voice low enough for only Larissa to hear, “Larissa, did you really think Mom and Dad would have brought you back if it weren’t for me?”
Larissa stopped and turned her head. “Oh? Done with the act?”
Honora’s face was smug. “Do you know why they brought you here?”
“Why?” Larissa played along.
“Because I don’t want to marry that cripple, Haskell. Mom and Dad couldn’t bear to see my future ruined, so they decided to use you as my replacement. Isn’t that just pathetic?” Honora finished with a theatrical sigh.
Larissa feigned excitement. “Wow, really? That’s great news! The Palmers are a top-tier family, aren’t they? I’d be thrilled to marry Haskell.”
Honora’s taunt had fallen flat. Larissa didn’t seem hurt at all, which was infuriating. But she was probably just putting on a brave face.
“Great? You don’t know, do you? Haskell is a cripple now.”
“Oh, a cripple? That’s fine. I can heal his legs.” Larissa leaned closer to Honora. “But you, on the other hand, you turned him down because he’s disabled. You’d better hope you don’t regret it when his legs are healed.” Her tone shifted. “By the way, you were the one who hired that fugitive last night, weren’t you?”
At the mention of the fugitive, Honora’s face paled.
Larissa, however, turned to her with a beaming smile. “You should probably stop coming over here to humiliate yourself in the future.”
Honora’s smile froze on her face as she quickly left the villa.
Once she was gone, Sapphira asked, “What did she say to you?”
Larissa scrolled through the clothes on the tablet. “The usual provocations. She said Uncle Paxton and Vivica only brought me back to marry Haskell in her place.”
Sapphira froze, then looked at her husband, her gentle eyes blazing with anger. “So that was their plan all along! How could they be so cruel?”
Neville put an arm around her shoulder. “Don’t worry. Larissa is our daughter now. I will never allow her to be used as a replacement for their adopted daughter.”
