Solomon, however, was unimpressed. “A woman like Larissa? My dad and I dealt with her type all the time in Africa. If you want to take down Haskell, humiliating him with childish games like Garrick’s is pointless.”
He shot a mocking look at Garrick.
Faith couldn’t help but chuckle.
Garrick, still smarting from the earlier humiliation, snapped, “Hmph! You think you’re so much better than me, Solomon? I’d love to see how you plan to deal with Haskell and that bitch Larissa! Just make sure you don’t trip and fall, leaving the prize for my brother.”
Solomon sneered, a cruel glint in his eyes. “You don’t need to worry about that.”
The fastest and easiest way, of course, was to make Haskell fall from grace himself—to ensure he was no longer the brilliant grandson their grandfather was so proud of.
Fraser exchanged a look with his father, Trevor. He poured himself a glass of wine, took a sip, and smiled.
He would let Solomon, that reckless brute who was just as hot-headed and bloodthirsty as his father, be the one to charge ahead and wear Haskell down. All he had to do was bide his time and wait for the perfect moment to deliver the final blow and reap the rewards.
…
On stage, Draven finished his speech and walked down with Thatch and Zoltan.
Zoltan cast a disapproving glance at him. “Draven, don’t you realize words like that will only cause trouble for your brother?”
Finally getting the attention he craved, Draven smiled faintly. “Grandpa, even if I hadn’t said it, my brother’s situation is already attracting trouble, isn’t it? What I said doesn’t change a thing. I just wanted to show everyone here that I stand firmly with him.”
Zoltan gave him a thoughtful look but said nothing more.
Draven was pleased. At the very least, his actions had made his grandfather finally notice him, another grandson besides Haskell.
With that, he led Sapphira off the stage.
Finally, Larissa pushed Haskell’s wheelchair, and they went up to the stage together to give their speech. Larissa took the microphone from its stand and handed it to Haskell.
Haskell took it, his eyes scanning the guests below. His warm, gentle voice filled the lavishly decorated hall.
“First, I want to thank every one of our friends and family for coming tonight to celebrate the engagement of my fiancée, Larissa, and me, and for witnessing this happy moment. Secondly, I want to thank my future parents-in-law for entrusting me with their outstanding daughter. I swear on my life that from this day forward, I will take good care of her…”
Suddenly, a man’s voice boomed from the entrance:
“Haskell, I do not approve of you and Larissa getting engaged!”
