“It’s terrifying how stupid and utterly lacking in self-awareness some people can be,” Faith remarked with a sigh.
Listening to the Palmer family’s undisguised mockery of his son, Thatch’s brow furrowed in shame, but he didn’t dare utter a single word.
“To be fair, Trevor,” Tobias said, “while Draven is as dumb as your son Garrick, he’s certainly got guts. Daring to gamble with the lives of so many dignitaries on a night like this… that’s bold.”
Trevor and Garrick were speechless.
Garrick protested, “Uncle Tobias, don’t even compare me to that lowlife Draven. It’s insulting!”
Just as the argument between Draven and Finley reached a fever pitch, Haskell spoke up. “That’s enough.”
His voice was quiet, yet it cut through the tension and silenced both sides.
Draven immediately pleaded, “Bro, you have to believe me. Yes, I hired Torrin to ruin your engagement party with Larissa, but I was only worried about you! I never wanted to hurt you. I had nothing to do with these venomous creatures.”
He couldn’t afford to take the fall for this, no way!
Draven’s words were laced with sincerity, but Haskell remained unmoved, his gaze fixed on Draven’s face. “Draven, I’ve already confirmed that tonight’s incident wasn’t Finley’s plan. It was yours.”
Paxton breathed a sigh of relief. As long as his son wasn’t responsible, that was all that mattered. If the poisoned guests decided to seek retribution, his family would be ruined.
Finley also let out a silent sigh of relief, slumping back into his chair, drained. He had narrowly avoided taking the blame for Draven.
This was the one secret that could not be exposed. Thatch shot a nervous glance at Zoltan before lashing out at Larissa. “Larissa, since you’re marrying into our family, you should be protecting our reputation, not slandering it in public!”
Larissa was unmoved. “Excuse me, but I’m part of Haskell’s family. That doesn’t include you or Draven.”
Thatch’s face flushed with anger.
Haskell’s expression was unreadable. “Draven, I have all your accomplices in custody. Do I need to bring them here and interrogate them in front of everyone before you confess that tonight was your doing?”
Sweat beaded on Draven’s forehead, but he continued to feign innocence. “Haskell… I only did this because I was worried about you… I was afraid Larissa’s devious tricks would harm you…”
Haskell let out a dry laugh. “Is that so? Funny, because I also discovered that you and Valeria conspired to stage her kidnapping. So, when you tried to kill me and ended up crippling me instead, was that for my own good, too?”
