Finley’s pained question didn’t move Larissa in the slightest. “Finley, if you want to leave with any shred of dignity, pack your things and get out. Otherwise, don’t blame me for what happens next.”
Finley was silent for a long moment before letting out a deep sigh. He rose and began to slowly, mechanically, clear his desk. His eyes fell on a framed photo of himself with Leopold and Honora. A sharp pain lanced through his chest. He picked up the frame and tossed it into the trash can.
Once he had gathered his belongings, Finley walked over to Larissa and held out a set of keys. “These are for the desk drawers… Larissa, Dad and I know we were wrong. If you run into any trouble with the company, you can come to us…”
Larissa took the keys, cutting him off. “I won’t need to. If I have any problems, I’ll ask my father and my five uncles for help.”
Finley understood perfectly. The “father” she spoke of was not Paxton.
Swallowing the bitter taste of regret, he left the office that had once been his. Every step felt impossibly heavy, as if he were carrying the weight of the world.
Walking through the main office area, Finley paused and swept his gaze over the employees who were now staring at him. “From today on,” he announced, “I am no longer the CEO. My sister, Larissa, is. You will all cooperate with her fully.”
After his announcement, Finley took one last, lingering look at the company he had built, then walked away from Starlight Media, his shoulders slumped in defeat.
The employees watched his lonely figure disappear, whispering among themselves. “What was that all about?”
“I have no idea.”
“It’s obvious, isn’t it? We have a new boss.”
“The sister he mentioned… was that the woman who just came in?”
Ursa clutched a folder to her chest and pointed. “It’s locked in the top drawer of the desk.”
Larissa looked down, took the key Finley had given her, and opened the drawer, pulling out Leopold’s file.
Leopold’s face was a mask of desperation. “Larissa, I don’t want any money. I just don’t want to terminate the contract.”
A cold, dismissive laugh escaped her. “That’s not your decision to make. I’m the boss here now. What I say, goes.”
Hearing this, Leopold looked as if he was staking everything on one last gamble. “Fine, Larissa. I’ll sign a new contract. No matter how much money I make for you in the future, I won’t take a single cent!”
