“Just a poison that only I have the antidote for,” Larissa said nonchalantly. “Don’t worry, it’s not fatal. It will just cause you unbearable pain when it activates. As long as you behave yourself from now on, I’ll give you the antidote periodically. Otherwise, you’ll just have to endure the agony.”
Finley didn’t believe her. “I’ve never heard of such a powerful poison…”
Before he could finish, Larissa snapped her fingers. A searing pain twisted through his organs, so excruciating he thought he would die.
When the agony subsided, Finley was a broken man. He bit his lip, staring at Larissa with a rage he dared not voice. It seemed his life was now completely in her hands.
At that thought, he closed his eyes in despair.
Larissa clapped her hands together. “Finley’s badly injured, so he can’t go back to the Judson estate like this. I’ll leave him with you for now. I’ll come get him tomorrow.”
“Of course.”
Haskell gestured to Crispin, who walked over to Finley, hoisted him over his shoulder, and carried him out of the factory to the car. Crispin’s men took Finley’s four bodyguards as well.
Soon, only Larissa and Haskell remained.
“Now that we’re alone, tell me your story,” Larissa said. She was genuinely curious about him.
Haskell smiled. “Alright. But this place is a bit grim. Let me take you somewhere more peaceful.”
“Sounds good,” Larissa agreed readily.
He sighed, a bitter smile on his lips. “Until the accident. When I lost the use of my legs, it felt like everything around me changed. The respect and concern that once surrounded me vanished, replaced by gloating and avoidance. Now, whenever I see people smiling at me, it feels so fake.”
Larissa shrugged. “That’s normal. When you fall from a great height, all the goodwill you once had seems to disappear, and most people just want to kick you when you’re down. The ones who stick by you in times of trouble are the only ones who truly matter.”
Haskell turned to look at her. “Like you? When everyone else was keeping their distance, you were willing to accept me.”
Larissa paused. “Me?” She let out a short laugh. “I wouldn’t say I was a port in a storm. It was more like a mutually beneficial arrangement. I coveted your good looks, and you just happened to be able to provide them.”
She stood up and moved closer to him, crouching down. “Let me see your legs.”
