At his words, Larissa laughed. “The best things are always rare, and this poison is no exception. It’s not like I have an endless supply. I’ve only managed to create five doses in total.”
“Honestly, you could say Finley was lucky to be the second person I ever used it on. Faith was the third, which means I only have two doses left.”
She continued to explain, “The reason it’s undetectable is because its key ingredient is extracted from Shadow’s venom glands.”
“The poison is controlled by Shadow. As long as Shadow doesn’t trigger it, the victim feels nothing, and it remains hidden.”
“Extracting too much venom would harm Shadow, and if anything were to happen to it, the poison would become completely inert. That’s the true antidote. The ‘antidote’ I created only suppresses the effects; the victim would need to take it periodically for the rest of their life.”
Haskell understood now. “So, if anyone found out the true cure, Shadow’s life would be in danger. The more people you poison, the greater the risk to it.”
“Exactly,” Larissa confirmed.
“In that case,” Haskell mused, “it seems like a waste to have used such a precious dose on Faith.”
“It’s no waste,” Larissa said nonchalantly. “If someone pushes me far enough to consider it, I’ll use it. Besides, I have other types of poison. They may not be undetectable, but they’re more than sufficient for a little torture.”
After finishing the acupuncture, Larissa applied the medicinal oil to Haskell’s knees and calves, then summoned Snowy and Sage.
Snowy, who was usually all business, didn’t immediately start the massage therapy. Instead, the small snake slithered onto Haskell’s lap and stared at him intently.
Haskell looked at Larissa, confused.
“I think Snowy is warning you,” Larissa translated. “It is telling you not to reveal that Shadow’s death is the real cure.”
Haskell was taken aback for a moment, then he smiled gently at the snake. “Don’t worry. Your secret is safe with me.”
Only then did Snowy coil around his knee and begin the massage.
“They’re more loyal and principled than most people,” Haskell remarked.
“Well, Haskell, you called it. It’s Faith,” Larissa whispered with a knowing smile, spotting Faith and her brother, Solomon, sitting in the hall.
But there was one person whose presence she hadn’t expected.
Finley.
The moment she saw him, she knew why he was there.
Heh. He was here to act as a witness for Faith, to testify that Larissa had indeed poisoned her.
With that thought, Larissa didn’t even spare him a glance.
Unlike Larissa’s cold indifference, Finley tensed up the moment he saw his sister. For a fleeting second, he had the urge to stand and call out to her.
But when she didn’t even look in his direction, the urge died, and the hopeful expression on his face slowly crumbled.
