At the thought, Trudy shivered. Fearing he wouldn’t believe her, she continued, “Mr. Palmer, I’m not lying. I really didn’t know he was your brother. My mother didn’t know either! If she had known that baby was a young master of the Palmer family, she wouldn’t have dared to touch him, not for a hundred fortunes!”
Beside them, Larissa toyed with a silver needle. “So, what you’re saying is, as long as it wasn’t Haskell’s brother, all those other children your mother abducted deserved their fate?”
Trudy stiffened. “That’s not what I meant…”
Noticing Larissa’s terrifying gaze, she quickly changed the subject. “Mr. Palmer, I’ve been searching for the person who killed my mother and took your brother for years, but I never found them. That’s why I started working for Lucius. He promised he would help me find my mother’s killer!”
As she spoke, she remembered why Lucius had sent her ten million dollars the day before. Had Lucius discovered the secret? Did he know the child she was looking for was Haskell’s brother?
Haskell’s face was a mask. “Tell me everything you know about my brother from twenty-two years ago.”
Trudy didn’t dare hide anything. “Twenty-two years ago, I was newly pregnant. My mother, wanting to earn more money for me, went back to her old trade. She got a request from someone willing to pay two hundred thousand for a son.”
“She was about to go looking for a suitable baby when a man, all covered up in a hat, mask, and glasses, came to her with a one-month-old boy, wanting to sell his own son. My mother was suspicious, but it was business falling into her lap, so she bought the baby for ten thousand.”
Haskell watched her, his voice devoid of emotion. “And then? Continue.”
Terrified by his gaze, Trudy stammered, “The baby my mother took was gone too. Because my mother was identified as a human trafficker, the police closed the case without further investigation.”
“Mr. Palmer, that’s everything I know,” she pleaded, anxiously watching his face. “I don’t know who took your brother. I’ve been looking for him for twenty-two years and found nothing. Can you let me go? ”
“I promise I won’t tell Lucius I saw you. I only worked for him to find my mother’s killer, and now that I know it was all a misunderstanding, I have no reason to continue.”
