“Alright, then I won’t refuse,” Larissa said, sliding the agreement back into its folder. “I’ll sign it after we’re married.”
Watching this, Sapphira and Neville felt a sense of relief. As much as they knew their daughter was brilliant and could protect herself, a parent’s greatest fear was seeing their child get hurt in a marriage. Haskell’s guarantee, whether he changed his mind in the future or not, ensured Larissa would never be at a disadvantage.
...
“Haskell’s legs are useless, and now his brain is too! What kind of man signs an agreement like that?” Milton cried out in disbelief. “Over a woman! Is she worth it? A man’s money is for showing off to women, not for giving to them!”
Honora, who had been leaning against him, finally let out a disgusted scoff and sat up straight. She was truly fed up with this powerless, stingy second-generation brat. What she couldn’t stand even more was the lengths Haskell would go to for Larissa. On one point, however, she agreed with Milton: Haskell’s brain was as broken as his legs.
Lost in the drama on the screen, no one in the suite noticed the tiny insects that had flown in, landing on the rims of their wine glasses. With a slight shudder, they deposited a fine white powder that dissolved instantly into the drinks.
...
After seeing Haskell’s gift, Avril presented hers. “Larissa, this is from me. Just a little something.” She scratched her cheek, a bit embarrassed. “I honestly didn’t know what to get you, and I figured you don’t need anything, so I went with something simple—a complete set of every shade of Christian Louboutin lipstick.”
“This is perfect. I was just needing some,” Larissa said, accepting the gift. She then let her gaze sweep over Haskell, admiring him from head to toe. “You look very handsome tonight, Haskell. Breathtakingly so.”
“I’m glad you like it. I dressed especially for you,” he replied with a soft smile. “And you look beautiful, Larissa.”
Just then, one of the villagers at a nearby table called out, “Larissa, the way you two are looking at each other makes me want to shout ‘kiss, kiss!’”
The table erupted in laughter.
Far from being embarrassed, Larissa shot back, “If that’s what you want to see, just wait for our wedding. I’ll make sure everyone gets an eyeful.”
His gift was a pair of matching mugs, each decorated with a cute, cartoonish portrait of Larissa and Haskell. It was his sincere wish that they would have a lifetime of happiness together.
Larissa finally tore her eyes away from Haskell and turned to Rigby. She accepted the gift with a polite nod and a small smile. “Thank you.”
Afterward, Haskell and Avril returned to their table, with Rigby following suit.
Finley turned to Leopold. “We should give her our gifts now.”
Leopold nodded and stood up.
Seeing that his father and aunt remained seated, Finley asked, “Dad, Aunt Josette, aren’t you giving her a gift?”
