At his wife’s words, Paxton stiffened.

“Don’t be ridiculous,” he said, his voice firm and convincing. “Why would I hire someone to kidnap you? You’re my wife.”

Vivica fell silent.

Seeing his opening, Paxton softened his tone. He walked over and took her hands, his eyes full of concern.

“Vivica, I had no idea you were kidnapped all this time…” His voice cracked with emotion. “You’ve suffered so much because of me.”

He looked up, his gaze hardening. “That monster Larissa… what she did to you is unforgivable. I will find a way to make her pay.”

His apparent devotion solidified Vivica’s trust. “Larissa was lying,” she thought. “She was just trying to drive a wedge between us! The idea that Paxton would have me killed is absurd. We’ve been happily married for thirty years!”

Hearing his father echo his mother’s certainty, Finley felt a wave of exhaustion. “Alright, let’s not discuss this out here. We’ve embarrassed ourselves enough for one night. Let’s go home. I’ll find out who was really behind Mom’s kidnapping.”

“Leopold, why won’t he believe me?” Vivica asked, her voice filled with despair.

Leopold’s expression was complicated. “Mom, I know you’re overwhelmed. But Finley’s right, let’s just go back to the rental for now. We’ll figure this out.”

The cake was a masterpiece, a towering eight-tiered palace. Its ivory and champagne-gold fondant was as smooth as satin, shimmering in the light. The bottom tier was wrapped in hand-sculpted sugar vines, the middle tiers were adorned with fresh roses and sugar lilies in shades of pink and red, and atop it all sat a lifelike figurine of Larissa.

Larissa suddenly remembered seeing her mother hunched over a tablet for the past month, sketching and designing. So this was what she had been working on.

She linked her arm through Sapphira’s. “Mom, so this was your surprise.”

“Yes,” Sapphira said, a little shyly. “I hope you don’t think it’s too ordinary.”

“Are you kidding? This is anything but ordinary!” Larissa exclaimed, taking the cake knife. “This is the best surprise ever. Mom, Dad, everything you’ve done for my birthday tonight has been one wonderful surprise after another.”
