At the time, Larissa had found the question strange but hadn't given it much thought. "Why would you ask that? I've never thought that," she'd replied.

Torrin had been silent for a moment before hanging up. He hadn't contacted her at all for the next week. Larissa had been busy developing a new remedy and hadn't paid his absence much mind.

Then, on the same day Haskell arrived in her village, Torrin had finally called—to break up with her.

Haskell saw the frown on her face and smiled. "Don't overthink it. It's just a theory. In any case, you've broken up, and I'm your fiancé now."

"Whatever. He's the one who ended it. A jerk is a jerk, no matter what his reasons were," Larissa said, dismissing the thought.

Haskell was pleased to see she truly didn't care about her ex. His goal hadn't been to defend the man, but to preempt any potential lingering feelings Larissa might have if she discovered her ex had loved her all along. He wanted to be the only man in her heart.

"So," he asked again, "about lunch?"

Larissa's stomach rumbled. "Sure. Let's go."

She moved behind Haskell's wheelchair to push him. Crispin, who had been waiting nearby, saw that the treatment was over and hurried over.

"Ms. Judson, allow me," he said respectfully, taking the handles. "You've been working for three hours. Please, have some water and a snack." He handed her a bag he had prepared.

"If you like it, we can come here often," Haskell said, watching her eat with gusto. "The menu changes regularly, so you won't get bored."

"Okay," Larissa agreed. "We can celebrate all our holidays and anniversaries here."

Haskell raised an eyebrow, feigning ignorance. "Anniversaries, you say?"

Larissa put down her fork and ticked them off on her fingers. "The day we first met, our engagement anniversary, and, in the future, our wedding anniversary?"

His eyes crinkled with a smile. "Deal."
