Larissa wiped her hands and sat back down. "I am letting him stay. I just agreed to it, didn't I?"

Sapphira managed a dry laugh. "That's not letting him stay. That's putting him under house arrest."

"Same difference," Larissa said dismissively.

Seeing her daughter so composed, Sapphira finally relaxed. "Honestly, Larissa," she confessed with a shudder, "if he had stayed here any longer, I might have started to believe he was a good kid. The thought terrifies me. If this is all an act, he's far too good at it."

"What do you mean, Mom?" Larissa asked.

"These past few days, after you and your father left for work, Fergus would come over to chat," Sapphira explained. "I was wary of him at first, but he was so patient. You know I've started designing again. When I was focused, he would keep a respectful distance and do his own thing. The other day, I was working on a gown inspired by a forest, and he was quietly assembling this intricate model of a forest cabin. It actually gave me a lot of inspiration. Yesterday, I was reading a book on marine life, and he sat nearby sketching sea creatures with watercolors. Whenever I looked up, it felt like he understood my interests, and it gave me this subtle sense of being seen."

"When I looked tired, he'd bring me a cup of coffee. Or he'd put on my favorite calming music. He noticed me squinting in the bright light and would quietly adjust the curtains, never saying a word, never interrupting me."

"When I realized what was happening, I was horrified. I imagined that if I spent enough time with him, I would start to trust him unconditionally. It got to the point where if you had told me he was dangerous, I might have thought you were overreacting."

Hearing the door open, Fergus spun around.

When he saw Larissa, he shot to his feet, a look of unconcealed terror on his face.
